mechanical timing questions

Is there anything to mechanical timing other then all the marks physically lining up?

On the timing belt install thats pretty much it. The cam sensor timing you ground the single wire timing plug on the fire wall and with a timing gun hooked to cylinder 1 plug wire gunning the harmonic turn the cam sensor to set timing to +/- 5° tdc

Has anyone heard of ignition timing being set to 7 instead of 5?

After setting the timing at 5 deg, it will normally show 7 deg when you unplug the gound wire.
