Ok, I've been searching for a bit and couldn't find anything on the forums but was curious.

I know how to use the helicoil and drill, tap, and install them I do them all the time at work. Only problem is at work we use SAE (Boeing aircraft) and work pays for their kits.

My problem is, can you use a tap from a tap/die kit for a thread insert? I need to repair the threads for my exhaust manifold to head studs. I have 3 m8x1.25 and 2 m10x1.25 and trying to figure out what size of tap to use for the inserts. I have the correct drill sizes to drill the holes.

The kits with their taps are pricey, $45 for the m8 kit and $60-$70 for the m10's.

It seems rediculous to spend that much just for a tap.

Solution
the taps are odd ball size, and kit specific.... you HAVE to have the Tap that matches the outside OD of the insert

you may be cheaper off going to a machine shop and have them install the inserts..

you said you install them at work.. but Use SAE.. that fine.. convert the studs to SAE size then
the 8mm is about the same as 5/16 and the 10mm is about the same as 3/8

Solution
Yea, I went to STM and bought the replacement studs so their on their way for metric. I'll probally just go and get the STI bit or see about finding someone that has them already and borrow them.
