trying to tap a hole, which I've never done and so far its not catching. I'm just turning it and struggling to keep it straight. I really don't want to mess up this hole after all this time I've been working(on this here break caliper), so I was hoping someone would have a tip. I looked it up and didn't find much on the tap not catching. I'm wondering if I need to press on it. don't want to take any risks.

anyone happen to know which tap I'm suppose to use to match the outer thread of the "perma-coil" 10 x 1.5? I was actually suppose to be drilling for a smaller m8 x 1.25 then mixed up the boxes and drilled for the m10's. so I'm just going to put it in and the m8 happens to fit right inside the m10. but what tap do I need to thread the hole for these "coil" products? my taps for m12 are either 1.5 or 1.75 pitch. I did notice heli-coil have their own special tap, so does that mean I will need some special perma-coil tap?

judging by eye my m12 x 1.5 isn't fine enough for the coil. looks like is need a 1.25. neither perma nor heli state the outer thread specs for their coil inserts. maybe because you're supposed to, or they just want you to use their taps?

If you messed it up and drilled for a M10 insert you can't put another insert inside that one to get back down to M8. You might be able to get the hole welded up so you can start over or get a "new" part.

It shouldn't be too difficult to find a rear 1G caliper bracket from one of the vendors that specialize in parting cars or the classified. One of my favorites is http://www.mitsubishigraveyard.com/ Gary is a good guy and a long time supporter.

you sure? the m8 fits perfectly in the m10. and the regarding my confusion about the outer thread pitch -its the same as the inner, duh. but wait, the m8 is 1.25 and the m10 is 1.5, so it shouldn't fit right in there... just checked again and it does fit like perfectly as far as I can feel.

whoe whoe, my life? knock on wood but I doubt this slightly 'modified' caliper would bring my life into the equation. check it out:

and it fits perfect. perhaps some loctite or something to aid in keeping them together but as right as the first insert sticks to the metal the second should function similarly no?

Find another one and start over...I wouldn't trust mine or my families life with that part being an integral piece of the braking system. Its your call though.

I usually never chime in on a thread just to give my opinion, but:

Dude, why would you "monkey rig" something as important as your brakes? You can ask pretty much anyone who knows me, I am the cheapest mofo out there, but for something that CAN have an impact on your life, or your loved ones, get another caliper. It wouldn't cost you 40 bucks (if that) and then you dont have to worry or question
should function
as intended.

I would not run my car with a caliper like that. You might get away with it for a few weeks/months/years, but you also might not. Your life worth more then 40 bucks?

thanks for the advice. I guess you can call me risky then. everything fits pretty solid. don't see where it could be compromised. its a rear brake and that guide pin won't be going anywhere anyway.

btw, is that gsp as in Georges St Pierre? great to know you like DSM's. but I'm not impressed by your performance

1983 was the year on my rx7. Gsp was the model.

The performance of my car isn't in question. But I appreciate you judging it...coming from someone who drives an n.a. Eclipse and jury rigging an important brake part means your opinion holds merit. But keep an eye on that time. It will slowly get better.

I'm not familiar with Georges St. Pierre quotes. My time in my profile is what i thought you were referring too. More boost and ill break into the 6's in the ⅛ mile.

What do you mean that you don't see it a compromise. You have stacked heli-coils holding in a brake caliper pin. That is as stupid as it get's right there. Don't get mad because people who know more than you tell you that what you are doing is a bad idea. You came into this thread asking all kinds of questions about is this ok, how do i do this, how, how, how. Now somehow you are an expert on the structural integrity of a stacked heli-coil. WOW.

hey, I'm not gonna argue your implied point that I'm the dumbass here. I just poked a hole in my new brake piston boot trying to get that ring in that holds it in, and I'll probably do something else stupid the next time I gather the patience to go at it again. so things are challenging for me obviously, but #1 no one was angry, unless maybe you are which I can see why. and I don't think I know better than most people in here, but the way I see it, if one heli-coil is safe, and as I've read even stronger than original hole metal, one inside another wouldn't seem to me stronger than two of these strong heli-coils. if there is something I'm missing feel free to elaborate. or if instead this incites you to flame away and make a subtle prayer in the back of your head my car will flip over like Jon Travolta's in "Carrie" and as I'm spinning through the air images of your online admonishments will flash before me til the moment I bust into flames. "silly fool!" "you'll see who the expert is..."only idiots double up heli-coils"... I'm sure you'll get some rise out of me, and there ya go. nice to meet you Mr wheat. I'm juntjoo. thanks for bumping into me.

actually, now that I've thought about it, would the two heli-coils slip against each other being the same material rather than grip with the softer metals of the bolt and hole?
