I recall this us a resistor if some sort for the fans on my 90, do I need it if just running a single fan? Does it protect the circuit somehow?

On a stock 2 fan system that resistor was to run the condenser fan (ie. driver's side one) at medium speed {also the radiator fan (ie. passenger side one) at medium speed if the radiator thermosensor was not on} when the AC compressor was on. However once both the AC compressor is on and the AC pressure switch is on, the condenser fan got overridden to high speed (by the condenser fan motor relay high).

For just a 1 fan system you can use the radiator fan connector (ie. passenger side one) provided the radiator thermosensor is working to cycle it. However the AC will not run the radiator fan at half speed without that resistor (and radiator fan motor relay lo) connected when the radiator thermosensor is not on (so radiator fan will not be on at all then). Of course if you don't have AC you won't care.

For a 1 fan system you should not use the condenser fan (ie. driver's side one) connector because then you will not have the radiator thermosensor to cycle it. It would only turn on/off with the AC providing that's working.
