I hope the pic went through.

But I went to the 1/8 mile and heard some light knocking comming from the head. Took off cover and saw this, looks like I got a little too hot.

But anyway does this mean I have to tare it off and put on a new one? (more or less). I have a spare head that I had plans with, but shuld I just rebuild it to stock more or less to make it quicker? dont know how bad it is, but I dont think it sounds like lifter tick anymore. Kinda scared to drive it, or evel turn it on and let idle. Any advise would be gratefull. :thumb:

That discoloration is pretty normal. Nothing looks out of the ordinary there. If it started knocking while driving it hard i would drain the oil and look for metal flakes.

yea but every where else is a light gold except their its almost black. But I hear the tapping/ knocking from their only also. I will drain the oil and look for shavings. that would mean my cam baring went right?

First off, there is no such thing as a cam bearing in one of these engines. Second i would assume a rod bearing before anything in the top end. As i said before, that discoloration is completely normal. I wouldn't assume anything is wrong with the head by looking at that picture.

ok thats cool man. thank you I just got a little scared with it, I will let it idle for a while and see if that tapping/ knocking goes away. I dont think it does, and I am pritty shure its up top, not bottom end.

it doesnt sound like lifter ticking, but not as loud as a bottem end knock like a light knocking. I will try to get a vid of it and try to post it but I dont know if that would work.

I havnt driven it seince i have heard it but I wount, and I will check oil.

After changing the oil if there is no silver like oil then refill with new oil and make sure you just didn't get some random lifter tick. :thumb:

I change my oil every 2k the guy befor me the 2nd owner had reciepts of it changed every 3k. My head is light gold everywhere else just on the section of it. On the exh. side it is gold.

It was hot that day, im shure my IAT's where spiking. I felt a loss of power on my last run and the next day found this.

I take care of this car I have fixed this car so much. Didnt run when I got it. I think it just got too hot, but im no master.

ok well thank you all but I am just going to get my other head ready quicker than I had planed and just swap it out. It will be easier than thinking about it.

Don't just throw another head on there. There is nothing that will make noise in the head other than lifters. As i said before that cooked on oil is completely normal. IF you are worried about the head having an issue than pull the cam caps and look at the bores. If they are fine than the head is fine.

ok I will do that. I didnt want to use the head just quite yet, I just got scared when I heard it. What would I be looking for on the caps. Just scratched or score marks? things like that.

^this... it didnt run when you got it, who knows what previous owner did or didnt do.. and oil change every 3k miles for how long? the entire life of the car? LOL what about the first owner? just saying... it probably had a few late oil changes LOL:thumb:

how many miles are on this motor again?

I didnt mean any harm or anything but I was just saying I know the car for the most part.

140,000 now 132k when I got it, im the 3rd owner of the car. first owner was a 47 year old guy got it in april 1998, gave all the papers to the 2nd owner of all records. 2nd owner had it for 13k miles. no records on that, he put in diffrent spark pluggs in and had terrable miss fires. He also tried to change fuel filter and it was leaking cause it was loose. I got the car and started but would only idle. ('cause of the plugs). the car was stock when I got it, My profile is up to date. suspencion was total crap also when I got it. so everything is new.

I am not worried about it just got nervous when I heard the knocking. I dont like that cause I dont know how bad it is. I can figure out suspencion knocks.

Drain oil and inspect like indicated, or put it back together and pull spark plug wires one at a time and see if the noise goes away. If it does its a bottom end concern.

Make sure you don't mix up the cam caps when you take them off. They are NOT interchangeable.

Get a mechanics stethoscope. Noise ricochets around under the hood like a bi***!

If you're hearing it on that side of the motor, then don't rule out noise in the clutch area being the culprit.

I heard what I thought was rod knock and shut my car down immediately a few months ago. After draining the oil, I pulled the pan and checked the rod bearings. I did not seeing anything wrong with the bottom end until after I took the caps off and pushed the rod up and down and looked at the piston area. It turned out that I broke a wrist pin in half! It does make sense now why the noise sounded close to the head, but had a definite knock like a rod.

I like the method i described just becuase its quick and easy, you could also unplug injectors one at a time instead. But with the way noise travels in an engine, and it being a knocking sound i really doubt its in your head.

Just so you know, most 4G63's are darker in that area of the head, if you look at the under side of your valve cover you'll notice there is a significant lack of openings for the baffle/PCV routing right above that spot, this causes a small buildup of hot, oil infused crankcase vapor in that area and it stains the head some. No big deal.

sorry for the long time for a check up, my internet was down. But I changed the oil and didnt find any shaving. The noise is still their, helped a little. Its not in the block, did the inector thing. I think it is the lifters making noise. It was just a little deeper then the lifter tick I had befor, and doesnt start whe I start the car. It warms up a little then I start to here it.

that makes me feel a little better on the discoloration.
