The trans shifts great. How did this happen?

Well, I noticed a whining sound going down the road one day. I did some investigating, checked the fluid in the transfer case and rear diff. They were fine. For some reason I automatically ruled out the transmission. I drove around town a bit and the whining never got worse, trans still shifts great, no problems to speak of. Well tonight I decided I'll check the fluid in the trans. I poured one quart, didn't see any come out, poured another half court and nothing, I peer underneath and see that my 15.00 worth of fluid is now on the ground. I took off the cross-member and discovered this.

Are there any transmission gurus in here that know what would of caused this? The transmission still shifts normal.

"pinion" shaft bearing failure. Causes the pinion to get off center and break teeth off of the pinion or/and the ring gear. If you roll the gear around, you'll probably see a tooth or two missing from the gear that is visible in your pictures. I've also seen ring gear bolts come loose and shoot though the case.

Ever shoot a BB gun into a pane of glass, what happens, it makes a tiny hole and blows out the back side.
It appear something popped it from in the inside out.

Tough luck, man.

Well, thanks for the replies. I'm gonna tear it off this week sometime.

When you see a hole in that spot it is like Strm Trpr said, something punched from the inside out.

The ring gear for the front diff, which is what you see there, is also the oil pump for the unit. The gear sits terribly close to the case. When you see a hole in that spot something got caught between the gear and case and since the case is aluminum and weak in that area, the gear will push what ever it is through there. 90% of the time it's a chunk of the 1-2 shift fork. the rest of the time it's a chunk of something from the center diff. A broken gear will do it too, but since you are still able to drive it, it's not a gear.

A bearing failure in the front diff or output gear will not cause this.

The problem is if you heard gear whine noises you have gear damage due to lack of fluid. I would be willing to bet that you will find the gears are wiped out as well.
