The proper and NHRA legal way to install a fuel cell?

Only reason I won't be mounting mine like that even though I really like that is I want my parachute support bar to be connected to my cage and the towers.

It's real light. Not even 7lbs with all the mounting hardware. From the back view of the car you can't see the bottom of the cell at the normal line of sight but it's obvious the stock tank is gone.
 
Does anyone have pics of a JM Fab stock location fuel cell with an NHRA legal cage around it?
 
I think you mean firewall around it and I don't think you need one with that fuel cell because it doesn't come up into the inside of the car.

No, you only need a firewall inside of the car. Read the NHRA rule book. If mounted outside, the cage needs to be framed by 1 1/4" bars or cage. JM's website even comments on the fact that it may not be legal as is in some sanctioning bodies on their website. So again.....does anyone have pics of a NHRA LEGAL JM Fab fuel cell install?

I don't know where your getting cage from but a firewall is the case not cage they are talking about, so like you said your not coming up into the car so you should not need a firewall or case for your cell but depending on how strict your local track is you may still need one. I think the 1 1/4 bars are what has to be used to mount the cell under the car, because that's about the size that the JMF uses to mount it to the bottom of the car.

Dude, I'm not trying to be an ass but I know what I'm talking about. The firewall is ONLY FOR INSIDE MOUNTED CELLS. Fuel cells mounted outside of the vehicle must have a 1 1/4 frame around it. Look at post 3 of this thread and go to the link at the bottom of the post for the rwd dsm build. Look at the pictures and you'll see the bars they built around where the cell will be. If that's not enough, and since you obviously still have not read it, here are the fuel cell rules taken straight from the rule book online.

Tanks: When permitted by class regulations, fuel tanks located outside body and/or frame must be enclosed in a steel tube frame constructed of minimum 1 1/4-inch O.D. x .065-inch (31.8 x 1.65 mm) chrome moly or .118-inch (3.0 mm) mild steel tubing. All fuel tanks must be isolated from the driver's compartment by a firewall completely sealed to prevent any fuel from entering the driver's compartment. All fuel tanks must have a pressure cap and be vented outside of body. A positive-locking screw-on fuel tank cap is mandatory on all open-bodied cars. Insulated fuel tanks prohibited. When used, fuel cells must have a metal box protecting the part of the cell which is outside of body lines or trunk floor, excluding hose connection area in rear. All non-metallic fuel cells must be grounded to chassis.

Now AGAIN......does anyone have pics of this specific fuel cell installed LEGALLY???
 
Because you don't seem to believe me here is a picture of Alex's car who has passed tech many times and runs his car just like this .

I never said I didn't believe you but the rule book is right above staring you in the face. Maybe he's passed tech at his local track for test n tunes and whatnot but the bottom line is that setup is NOT NHRA legal. I'm sure people get away with it at the track but I'm looking to do it right which is why I was wondering if anyone had pics of a legal install. This isn't one of them.
 
I think it's cool and respect the fact that your not trying to rig your car man I do. You see too many guys with half ass setups these days, but I think your being naive to think that Alex's car won't pass tech at ANY track. He isn't exactly a hack builder and if you check out his build thread you will see they cut no corners with his car. That thing was done up to the T. I go to Atco which is a very well known and respected track and I seen plenty of guys running setups that look worse than that and they pass tech. Where exactly do you plan on racing maybe some local guys from around you can chime in and tell you if I"m wrong or if your just being a little too cautious .

Found this by doing a quick search online. For non regular racing guys as in people who don't do it professionally or go to events all over the US this is the craziest I have seen for shielding.

I agree and I never said that the JMFab cell was NHRA legal my point is unless you plan on going to multiple tracks with dickheads as techs or plan on running a big time track car a firewall like that shell around the cell above is more than enough. Paul is a tech and even he said nothing more than that firewall would be needed around the cell. He even posted a link to where to buy one.
 
There has been no problems with my car passing tech at any track this year. The only question they ask is if it is in the stock location, and it is. But ive only been to 2 this season, maybe some other tracks will give me shit.
 
Hi, I am in the process of installing a fuel cell in my GST because I'm converting it to AWD this winter and want to do a little weight reduction since I just added like 500lbs in driveshaft and rear subframe. I wanted to get some advice on a cheap way to do this with the stock pump. is it possible and is it nhra legal?

also, I was planning on cutting out the trunk floor and riveting a can in for the fuel cell's firewall. Would that be considered "stock location"?
 
Is the setup that green92gsx posted on page 1 acceptable? As in will it pass an NHRA tech inspection? i would like to do mine that way to avoid having to build a giant firewall.

Yes, it will pass. The can is considered the firewall. Our local track is IHRA and I don't think they've ever given him a hard time during tech.
 
I'll be racing at atco and Englishtown this year just like this
