honestly it sounds good... you COULD do a very mild rebuild.. new oil pump, water pump, pulleys and timing belt... you should do the BSE delete too... its wild easy.. but you should as him about the 6 bolt he was gunna put in, so you have an idea of what you wanna do.

Given all of the early posts in this forum, I am still curious as to what, if any, 'extra' value may exist for my 1992 Eagle Talon Tsi AWD (white) due to its low mileage (less than 41,000).
Do the KBB prices give a fairly true measure, or do the enthusiasts out there think that the low mileage may actually yield some value?
Some additional details:
1992 Eagle Talon Tsi AWD, automatic trans., AM/FM CD Cassette, power windows, air conditioning, power locks, cruise, power steering, cloth seats.
All original (no mods at all)
More than half of the miles were highway miles. Primarily on nice, dry days. Hardly ever driven in wet weather.
Car has always been garaged. Exterior is very nice. No rust at all. Still a nice bright white. White aluminum wheels. Interior is extremely clean (no smokers in car). Tires are relatively low mileage Dunlop Sport SP8000s.

KBB lists the blue book trade in price at around 3800-4000 and private party value at about 4600-5000 for good-excellent and suggested retail of about 6000 for excellent. Are those prices reasonable expectations? too low? too high?

I would appreciate any insight that members can provide.

I'd buy the car
Part it out and keep looking for another car.
For that price you can make a few bucks off it
The job is duable but if you've never done it you will run into a few headaches.
Thats just my 2 cents. I never believe what people tell me because there is always something lurking in the backround that you end up finding out down the road.
That guy that is selling the car probably assumed the job can be done just as you are assuming the job
could get done now.

It wont hurt to replace the bearings as long as the crank is in good condition or polished up for the new bearings. I wouldnt throw in new bearings and call it a day.

If you are buying this car then your best bet is to have a machine shop look at the block. They will tell you for sure what you will be loooking at for a cost of a rebuild.

Good luck.

Like jmartinez said I wouldn't do anything with the bearings unless your willing to cut or at the very least polish the crank. If your gunna go that far you might as well throw rods and pistons in. If you just want to get the thing running then do the timing job and a waterpump, and if you wanna look a little further down the line then do a BSE while its out.

If the shell is in good shape and you plan on owning a DSM then keep it. Motors are easy to come by and build up. I would plan for a full rebuild. It doesn't cost a lot and it will give you peace of mind, "don't fix it if it isn't broken" mentality is pretty much saying you want to keep working on it because it's going to keep breaking. You might as well go ahead and put new everything in it while you have it out. I'd even go as far as having a machine shop check things out on the block.

It starts with an engine rebuild, then it becomes needing more power... might as well plan ahead.

Keep receipts for everthing btw.

Yea, will most likely be picking it up this Friday. Will be doing the timing (water pump, and BSE), and while having the front case cracked, for the balance shaft, just replace it with new oil pump. As I got it apart will drop the oil pan and see if there is any play in the rods, if there is will go further, if there tight will just leave them be and clean out oil screen and pan and reinstall. I do hope on keeping it for a while. My last DSM (1990 Talon) bought it not runing then got it to a point where I was happy with it then sold it a year after picking it up and have been regretting it since. This one however is a 92 Talon with the amber tail light that I love and a panda, body and interior are great condition actually shocked because of how long it sat. Even with 99k on clock.

Got 10-20 of hours of overtime a week planned for next 2 months so need a good excuse to spend it. Want a new DD that begs for attention as my current one is to reliable (1999 Chrystler 300M).

Dont want to do a to in depth build if not needed. That will come later when I get next years tax return and a extra block to build in spare time. Hopefully by this time next year will have it and started building. Or will have this one in garage on jacks and in process or putting back to gether current block.

Just need to do more searching on clutch set up, differences between 6 bolt and 7 bolt. And seeing what I got to work with. Comes with everything besides turbo so not to sure what setup is there now the 6 bolt or 7 bolt clutch.

Thanks ya'll for responses and if can ad more feel free love reading stuff on here, gives me giggles and ads wrinkles to the brain.

Drew's the name DSM's are the game.

yeah Defiant has a good point, that is also why I hate haggling over the price of a car when I'm about to make a purchase... The owner always over-values his car

Lol, weird. My post got moved here when I wasn't asking what it was worth. Just if I was walking into a headache. My original post had some good questions none pertaining to worth. But yes I knew before I posted that 450 for a dissambelled 1g AWD with everything besides turbo is a good deal. Just involves the time and maintence. But this is an inappropriate area to get my original questions answered about the needed repairs and maintence. Guess I"l clutter up the forums more later with the questions. Because searching didn't yeild the results. And yes searched for 2 days read plenty and had to form my own answers, I'll post the question by themselves. Which I posted in my last post. Guess getting it moved to a unrelated forum and no warning from a moderator is more confusing. Probally just scanned the title and moved without reading content. Oh well.

Again 450 for a dissambled 1g is great, but wasn't askin for the forums opinion. Was asking legitamit questions. I know that assembled and runing I can easily get 2.5-3k for it. And with paper work or maintence even more. But agan wasn't asking "whats it worth"

hey guys. a buddy of mine has a 93' TSi awd turbo he is selling. im thinking about buying it. it is black on black with black rims. no rust at all. only 85000 Km, really clean car. well taken care of. bigger turbo, k&n air filter. new brakes and shocks and struts on all 4 corners. after market deck. and it comes with some spare parts. heater core, wiper motor etc. he is firm on $6500.00. i was out for a drive and it is a solid car. but it seems a little much for the year in my opinion. anyone else think so???

that does seem alot for that car. a FULL list of mods would help

The only 1g i would ever consider paying over 5 grand for would be the fittipaldi talon. Other than that, you can find one that maybe isnt as good of condition for 1500-2000 and make it just as nice, if not better, with a couple grand of work. Thats just my opinion though.

thats it really. the turbo not sure how big it is but he only paid 700 for it...

keep in mind that i live in northern canada haha so everything here is more expensive. and only a hand full of these cars in this city. and this one is more than likely the one in better condition.

6500 might be a little much for this car..Unless hes got a gt35r turbo with a baller intercooler setup, and alot more work done..But the mileage is quite low, that's always a plus..Always find out when maintenance has been done..And if you really are looking at this car find out what mods the car actually comes with, before you end up over paying for something thats clean, and come to find out the mods don't add up to another couple grand..

I forgot this was in canada, sorry LOL. If the upgraded turbo is one thing that he feels raises the value alot, it should be a turbo that would have costed well over 700 brand new. It really is up to you though. If you feel its worth it to YOU, then go for it and get yourself a nice, clean, low mileage first gen. And like usual, pics always help with giving our opinions as well.

Hi there, I'm new-ish to DSMs. A late friend had a GSX in high school but I never was interested in it (american muscle or die! type back then) but I know it was fast on the 1/4 track. anyway I've built a few cars in the last 4 years. looking at buying a 1995 Eagle Talon TSi from a good friend of mine. I'd like to see if the price ($2,600, homie hook up price) checks out with you all. I'd like to be able to use this as a daily driver with balls but not enough to break parts. Does this sound like a bad idea to invest a good amount of my current savings into this car as a daily? I've heard the 4g63t is reliable and I and have heard they are dead UN-reliable any help or things to point out is appreciated/

specs:

1995 Eagle Talon TSi AWD
5 speed
Clothe seats
Unmolested body / interior

Engine:
'90 rebuilt 6-bolt block (pretty much new everything is what i was told)
2nd gen head machined to fit (full rebuild I think as well)
EVO headgasket
ARP headbolts
balance shaft removal
forced performance intake
cold air intake?

Boost:
Stock 1G turbo, burning a little oil (i'd replace it anyway)
Greddy FMIC
Greddy BOV
apexi turbo timer
3 pod pillar

Other:
3" downpipe / exhuast with electric cutouts
flowmaster
bunch of random other stuff thrown in (extra wheels/winter tires/more speed parts/650 injectors)

Known problems:
small paint chips, cracks etc
small leak in trunk
burns a small amount of oil, pretty sure its through the turbo
has trouble idleing on a cold block some days, will die once in awhile while idleing in park. this could be a simple idle sensor swap or worse

LOL... You think it's only gonna take most of your savings. By the time you get done drooling over some of the cars on this site, you will be wanting to get a second mortgage so you can buy some of the cool go fast and look sweet stuff that is out there. I have only been on for a few days and my build plan has changed at least once a day since then. As far as reliability, have the car checked out. Even if it costs you some money to do it, it may save you 10 times that amount in the longer term. If the car hasn't been abused in the past, reliability shouldn't be an issue... Unless you abuse it.

Just my opinion... but I think you will be fine...

Was there a bigger turbo on it at one point? And since its one of your boys, you could always go check it out and look for boost/vac leaks, and check out sensors to rundown the problem before you exchange money. But all in all a well taken care of DSM will be relaible if you make it that way. I say go for.

Was there a bigger turbo on it at one point?
Have no idea to be honest. The TSi had the stock little turbo on the stock 2g block when he bought it but had terrible shaftplay so he tore it out and threw another used/stock 2g turbo onto the *new* engine (2g head, '90 1g block). There are a good amount of performance parts in the car that seem to warrant a much quicker 1/4 time. ehh?

Anyway I test drove the car tonight being both passenger and driver. I can say that he scared me a little in the corners so it's not balls-less but I'm slightly dissapointed in it's acceleration. The one time I floored it was in 2nd gear I think on a slight uphill climb from a cali-roll-through merge. To say the least I think it was a lot slower than I had anticipated a DSM to be. Not super slow but did not push me back in the seat at all either. I'm going to buy it this weekend. For another $1,000 invested I'm sure I can get the boost higher and a new 16g. felt to me like it was slow but the speedo said otherwise. do AWD cars feel slower than they are? It felt like a 16/17 sec car. could that be or am I way out there? I'll take it to the track asap (next month's open drags) to get a base number and work up from there.

my one fear is reliablity though. I'd like a "quick" but not FAST street car that is reliable enough to DD. I know the rule about speed though "pick 3: fast, reliable, inexpensive"

What price tag would you guys put on a mint 1997 White w/ Tan Cloth Eclipse GS with 72,000 miles? Stock Infinity sound system, sunroof, all power minus seats. A few tasteful mods like a CF wrapped fuel door and rear tail center piece, a CF hood, and a CF GSX spolier. Fully tuned up from the ground up. Rotors, pads, tires, plugs, wires, fluids, filters, etc. DC black header and downpipe, new stock cat, genuine Magnaflow cat-back, not just a muffler. Sadly an Automatic. :( Clean as heck, no flaws in the paint. KBB shows it at $4,200 in excellent condition. It's nice to see one that's not been tormented by a young kid. :)

Its crazy people think they're worth 2-3 thousand when really they're worth 1,000-1,500. they think parts they bought are worth what they paid of them. and they arent after you beat on them for a year.. LOL
