test pipe and muffler

i have a stock 90 tsi fwd exhaust, and my funds are limited right now. so i was thinking rather than spending 600+ bucks on a turbo back, that i would just get a test pipe and magnaflow muffler... both have 2.5in inlets... will they bolt on to my stock exhaust system? is the stock piping 2.5? would i have to cut and/or weld anything?

The stock piping is 2.25".. so you'd need to have a muffler shop swage (expand) the stock piping to fit.

A test pipe costs ~$40 and a decent muffler ~$100... adding the labor for fitting.. may be better off just getting a used cat back (dsmtrader.com / Tuners classifides) or having a muffler shop make you one.

Go with the dp + testpipe and leave the stock muffler alone if funds are limited. I put a testpipe on a completely stock '91 tsi fwd and noticed some improvement in power (not a lot) but a big increase in gas mileage. I then added a 2.5" pressbent dp and a 2.5" testpipe with all else being 2" stock and that dp made a !!HUGE!! difference. It felt like I picked up about 10 HP!! The stock dp's are very restrictive -- much more than the mufflers -- so this is where you'll benefit the most along with the tp which is cost effective.

A test pipe is just a straight through pipe that replaces the cat...and if your OBDII it causes a CEL because your rear o2 is thinking that the cat is not operating.

ok sorry to steal you thread dude, but i have a question regarding the exast on a 2g

will i still pass emissions with a Apex'i N1 down pipe and an Apexi' N1 Cat-Back?
also how much HP does the silencer restrict on that system?
