Is it a bad idea to get a high milaged 2g awd dsm with.... lets say 117k miles on it? Since the engine has a lot of miles on it does it mean that I would have to soon change the piston rings, pistons, tranny and all that other crap?

Any help is appritiated.

this thread is cool, cause at this time, my 92 talon tsi awd is falling apart, I do the maint but I can't keep up with the corrosion it's experiancing in it's underbody. the brake lines blew on a after storage drive to the rear wheels and the corrosion underneath is killing my talon.

So I'm considering parting the thing out to needy 1g people. and buying a 2g.

deffinatly one thing you should consider of many things is. where this car was kept during it's life. .. michigan cars are disposable. I will never accept one even off a lot again.

any state that does salt on the roads for ice.. that's a state I'm not buying a car in. even if i'm forced to live there for some reason I'll probably still get my cars from flordia or some place without ice.

The salt water would be much worse on the car than salt from the roads.

crankwalk isnt the only issue with these cars, i bought my car bone stock with 115K miles and when i did a compression check it had low compression, it seems that many DSMs lose compression very early, maintenance plays an important role but it seems to happen so often and so soon. I owned many VWs before moving over to DSMs and those engines run 250K and compression is still near perfect. My bro-in-law is a VW fan but works at Mitsu dealer and says engine rebuilds on Mitsus are pretty common around 120-140K miles. Though DSMs run fast, they dont last nearly as long as Honda, Toyota, VWs....

bought my 97 rs with 117,000 and currently have 159,000 and didn't have too many problems. I did need to have my head resurfaced around 150,000 because I was burning oil. I also replaced the timing belt since I was at it.

getting a DSM with that kind of miles can be a good thing, especially if it runs good at that mileage. You really need to check it for crank walk. The fact that it runs good now is a good sign, most crank walk is evident much earlier like 60k. If it doesnt have crank walk, then you got yourself a nice 7bolt motor, excellent! Just keep an eye on the compressions, and beat the crap out of it like it has 10k on it! good luck bro

I agree with everyone, it totally depends on how the car was taken car of. If there was good maintance done to the car, you shouldn't have a problem with it. Check the tranny though, look for grinds, how it shifts, etc.
