I just found a 1992 FWD TSI pretty close to home. $2500 and it looks perfect. It is black. It appears to be one of the best looking TSI's I have seen ever. Engine is clean as well. Only mod is a boost guage and k&n in the stock airbox. Here is the downside it has 152k on it.

Since its a FWD I am not to worried about the drivetrain. I plan to run a compression test. What kind of PSI am I looking for?

A buddy of mine is big into DSM's. I know he has an extra 14b, FWD turbo tranny, head ect. So parts should be easy to find. He should also be able to help me rebuild the engine.

I plan on getting a spare block and rebuilding it. Is the SBR protopline rebuild kits any good? Depending on the machine work I think I could have a fresh engine for ~800 or less.

I think I just answered half my own question but would you buy this? 1 adult owner as well.

If my camaro sells friday I think I will be buying this talon. And doing alittle work on it.

What kind of MPG can you expect out of a stock TSI FWD?

When you do the compression test you don't want it any lower than 120. A real good result would be around 135 to 145 on a car with lots of miles. My car had 140-143 across.
I had 148,000(est.) when I got it.

I am sure what kind of gas milage you will get and as far as the rebuild I goes they are a good company but personally I have just not been happy with them.

But bottom line just be ready to do some work on it! I don't know of to many dsm's that don't need to be worked on from time to time.

I'm sure it will need some work ASAP. Especially the timing belt and BS belts first. Probably new tensioners as well. If I get this another block will be found and rebuilt before anything else. If the transmission feels OK I will drain the fluid and fill it back up.

Then of course make sure the brakes and suspension are in good order.

I have been trying to get ahold of the owner. I want to know if the AC and all the accessories work. That is a big deal to me. Half the reason I am selling my camaro is because the AC on it sucks.

As for rebuilds.

If the pistons haven't hit the valves you think I could get away with reusing them. Just add rings and bearings/gaskets (if it doesn't need bored).

I'd like to get it running good and reliable before I even think about modding. But even when I mod I plan to stay relatively mild. Probably just a small FMIC, evo16g, 2g or evo manifold and exhaust. And whatever supporting mods I need for that.

I think that you are wise for running the compression test on the car before you buy it.
I would definitely snatch up that DSM if the test comes back OK and the car is clean. Parts do seem easy to find for the 1G DSM's IMO, and it seems as if you were looking for a 'project car'. :thumb: Good luck with your new toy! :thumb:

BTW, @150k isn't shisnit for a DSM. I got one with 250k that gets me to work EVERY day and another with 170k that I am currently 'Pimping' for my wife to ride around in. DSM's can keep going and going and going... :dsm:

Sorry to hear about you selling the Camaro... :notgood:
Since I started 'spraying' my 2001 Z, I have become more 'Hooked' on it than ever. :sneaky:

If it was a 4th gen I'd keep it no doubt. Its a turdgen. With way to much money dumped in it. I finally fixed all the nagging little problems. But I still want something else. Something fast and smaller. Tired of driving the tank around.

I would think that you will also save a bundle on gas if you go for the DSM. If your Camaro is anything like mine, I am sure that you hate going to fill it up the way gas prices are now. I threw $35 bucks at my Camaro's gas tank the other day and it just burped... Still not full. :notgood:

Let us know if you get that new ride! :dsm:

make sure that the engine is a six bolt. You can tell by manufacture date. I thinks its 5/92 and before are 6 bolts or you can look for a specific dent in the oil pan that only six bolt motors have. When you do a compression test make sure the compression in the cylinders is close. Even if all your cylinders are above 120 psi, if one of them is 10 psi higher or lower than the other you got a problem.

Why would he not want it if it is a 7bolt motor? FWD cars rarely use heavy pressure plates and if he is freshening up the motor there should be no reason for it to walk.

FWIW, the EVOs I-III all used 7bolt variants...one of which put down over 500whp UNCORRECTED in a 2G here in CO and is still driven on the street almost a year later.
