I have a 1993 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS 2.0L non turbo FWD Auto transmission. It is stuck in Limp mode. I changed out the Solenoid pack no help. Thinking to check the TCU but I cant find where its located. Where is the TCU located? I found the ECU does the ECU act as the TCU as well?

Solution
The 1G TCU is under and forward from the ECU along the firewall and floor.

Thank you! Boy that one is a bugger to get to. I found a used one from the salvage yard sure hope it works.

Keep your old one and change out the capacitors and clean up it's circuit board. Cheap and easy and "usually" fixes the limp mode.

This is the critical capacitor that usually kills the TCU. You want to replace it before it leaks all over while the TCU is still working. Once it fails it's a less than 50% chance of fixing the TCU.

Yeah that cap looks like it has just started leaking. Sure do wish we still had radio shack stores around. Is there a better quality type of capacitor that i can replace it with that will not leak in the future?

Any name brand capacitor not made in China is going to be better than what's was used there.

I've been using the Panasonic FC series to replace the caps in ECUs and TCUs for a long time. That series has been superseded by newer versions. You want a 47uf 50v electrolytic capacitor for that location. Digikey or Mouser will have something. Buy a bunch to make the shipping worth it. This is the only one I'd trust Amazon for. https://www.amazon.com/pcs-Panasonic-FR-Capacitors-Ultra/dp/B072SRVWH8 if you have prime.

Awesome thanks for the info. Got some caps ordered hope the leaky cap didn't ruin the board. Looks like the trace is corroded under where the cap goes. Think ill solder in a peace of wire to double up the trace.

Yes! It worked. Replaced the leaky capacitor and ran some wires to replace the corroded traces in the TCU. It is shifting again. Thank you all soo much.
