calgary,
On my 96 tsi awd, it will start it first and be able to drive from there, but you cant shift from neutral. What would this be?

Should have described it better, IF you start the car in first gear, you are then able to drive it. If you start in neutral It won't shift into any gears.

try adjusting your pedal and bleeding your clutch slave cylinder, i had a similar problem after i changed my clutch

Will it shift with the car off, and just doesnt want to engage while its running?
If so, it sounds like a clutch engagement issue.
It will shift when the car is not running, but not when it's on :confused:

Bit more info: before it was having a very hard time shifting and the throwout bearing was siezed, the pin for the clutch fork fell off and they weren't being held together. The clutch fork was in good condition and the bearing was replaced. Now it won't shift at all.

When you hooked the shifter cables back up to the transmission, did you forget the washers?
I did this last week and i could get it into any gear while the car was on, while it was off i could put it in any gear then start driving but had to stay in that gear!
Went to adjust my cables to realize that the washers were not on!
Replaced them and works like a brand new transmission! (well not really but still)

When this happened to me the clutch pedal assembly went out on me....Also could be improperly bled system....or he didnt adjust the pedal correctly

I made sure to adjust it correctly, should I check the slave for leaks/ possibly replace it then?

Anyone else?

Instead of guessing where to start, first verify what's working. Have someone push the clutch pedal in & out for you while you watch the slave cylinder under the good to see if it's working. Hold your finger over where it meets the fork to feel as well while your friend pushes the pedal in and out. If you can feel it moving then it is unlikely that there is anything wrong with the pedal or your slave cylinder. Then the more likely suspect would be something to do with the clutch itself and/or something that works directly with it. The more probable issue is something to do with what you were working on.

I have done this and I can watch the clutch for going back and forth, I think it might not be going as far as it should be though.

The thing is before the trans was taken off to replace that throwout bearing, it would shift sometimes but very hard, now it doesnt shift at all. I think the pedal feels a bit squishy for a fidenza 4.3 clutch but maybe I'm wrong. I think it used to have alot more pedal effort to push the clutch in than it does now.

Ordered a clutch master and clutch slave, think this will help?

The good news is i believe i may know whats at fault. The bad news is i think its the clutch plate or the fork.
IMPORTANT TO KNOW- i am not a mechanic i enjoy working on cars and i often welcome car problems as i like a challenge but I AM VERY NEW to mechanic work and i am 19. my experience includes new exhaust work, new gaskets, painting, electrical rewiring, body work, and detailing i am new to the drive-train.

The Story -->

well me and a friend spent all day trying to figure out why my car wouldn't shift into gear while running. the problem came overnight. i had noticed no warning of this problem. At the beginning of the day we knew nothing about a manual transmission or the drive train. However after a lot of research we came up with a little test to determine if it was the slave/master cylinder or the mechanical assembly of the clutch inside the hub.

The Test -->

after bleeding the master cylinder and refilling it. i proposed we keep the slave completely open so that we should be able to shift gears at least once when the car is on. So we put a spatula yes a spatular in the way of the slave cylinder. no pressure was on the clutch pedal at this point. upon putting it into gear it made a grinding noise. Leaving me to believe the clutch is either seized or improperly aligned it is also possible that the fork doesnt have enough room to move, or that maybe one of the springs popped out and its in the way.

My 1st solution -->
i ordered a new F1 racing stage 2 clutch with a flywheel from ebay. i have not taken apart anything yet as my car is at a friends 20miles away when the part comes were gonna take everything out and il keep you updated as to whether or not replacing the clutch is necessary since i have already spent my money no need to potentially waste yours like i may have.

i hope my efforts can give you more confidence in where our problem may lay

you should also know that upon pushing the pedal i witnessed normal amount of movement which i believe to be 3/4 - 1inch movement right? it appears to be moving correctly in my scenario. however if you replace the master and slave cylinder and it worked please let me know.
