How exactly does it work? I mean how will there be specific cut keys for each of our cars? Maybe I'm missing something and know nothing about locks/keys.

Good luck finding a store that will be able to cut that key. There won't be many stores that will want to pay for another key if they mess up. Luckily, I can do it myself at work.

Oh, and this is how it works for blanks: They basically send you the correct blank of the car key (same grooves and such) and then you go somewhere to get them cut from one of your working keys.

Anybody figure out if you can cut them or not?

I'd be down for one of the design in the link. Not a big fan of the OEM looking one with just DSM on it.

Dealer is probably your best bet, or maybe a locksmith that is willing to cut it for you. If I get one, I'm doing it myself.

I'd buy two for myself and probably a couple to hand out for our local club. :D Make em already.

Great response guys! I've started the design process. Hopefully by Monday I'll have the prints to a machine shop. I'll post a 3d render when it's done.

This may be a dumb question, but isn't your key supposed to be made from a material softer that the metal fingers inside the lock tumbler? It makes sense to me. That way normal operation wears down your key instead of your lock components.
Also I should point out that the properties of stainless steel are moot if you're using it for something that sees a lot of friction and wear (especially after the key is cut). It will rust eventually without treatment in citric acid, which is what you can use to treat stainless steel after welding it to prevent rust.

I've thought about that and will probably end up making it out of aluminum.
Here's a 3D render of what I gave to a couple of machine shops for quotes:

If its going to be made out of aluminum, I could see those two narrow points on the handle breaking off. It's also going to be lighter than your house key.

Is the whole key aluminum or is there gonna be a rubber cover like the OEM keys? Also, I think Defiant's font for the DSM logo looks really good :)

It will be all metal. I'll use that font if Defiant tells me what it is.

Font: Impact
Style: Italicized, bold
but you have to make the strikethrough yourself, thats all

you should make it shaped like a compressor housing. the key part comes out of the comp. outlet.

patent pending. j/k you can use it just cut me a key for free I'll pay shipping!

I like that idea but for this to be affordable I have to do large production runs of the same design. I'll keep it in mind for future designs depending on how this one goes.
