I am in the middle of what has turned into a very long head gasket job. Along the way I have followed the suggested stage 0 mods in the tech guide, along with looping my PS, and removing my A/C Components.

My question is as I am prepping everything to be reinstalled can I remove the smaller water pump pulley since I removed the PS. I understand that it will have little to no affect whether it is there or not. I try to be very precise with things and I was just wondering if anyone else had done this, and what there the results. It seems to me that all I would need if anything is some washers from the local parts shop to maintain alignment with the drive pulley and alternator.

I appreciate the much heated debate between manual rack swap vs. looping the rack. However, I am really only concerned with the pulleys at this time. I do NOT expect to see any horse power gains from doing this just trying to tidy things up some and cut the excess fat. My AC did not work from the time I purchased the vehicle, and even after pressure testing the system fixing it was more of a hassle then pulling it. I did keep all of the parts to the power steering intact, however since my pump ate up one alternator before I could rebuild it so I thought I would give looping it a shot since everything was already easily accessible because the head is removed.

Any help is appreciated.

I wouldnt. The belts are spaced properly. Yea the pully is only so thick but it will throw the front pully off by being in more.

Hope this helped.

Remove a/c...ok. Remove ps....I would never do this again, but since your already set on this its ok.

Now for the OP question of removing that extra pulley on the water pump, this is ok to do and either flip the water pump pulley or space it out with some washers to align the alternator/water pump belt.

Thanks for the advice guys, but on a side note I still have all of the original unmodified PS parts, and a rebuild kit for the pump. I figured lets give it a try if it works I go with it if not I rebuild the pump.
