First off why do people remove these 2 items. Now i can see why on AC but why PS. Its so weird. What are the gains of doing this. How hard is it to take these out and the lines.

Well. Thats a good thing to hear.Should i get rid of cruise control also? Sorry to say i guess im gutting this thing. Ohh well long as it does good in the winter and better in the summer on dry pavement :D hell or even in the winter the heat is still good. Would it need these things to pass inspection? Its going to be a track car but also allowed to roam free on the streets. Maybe taste some nice sea breeze.

15whp thats crazy. When I took mine out I couldnt really tell a power difference, all I know is I love the feedback from the road. You can feel all the bumps through the steering feels like I have more control of the car. Not to mention looks better. I would take out the cruise control it really cleans up the engine bay.

I took out my cruise control and love it, throttle response was noticably improved. If you are going to take out the PS don't just take the pump and belt off. Take the whole assebmply out and convert to a manual rack.

manual rack? whats that and how much will it be hahahah

Your power steering rack essentaily uses fluid(using the PS pump for a hydrolic effect) to help you turn the wheels in the direction you want them to go. If you just cut the belt or just took of the PS pump the car would be rediculously hard to turn because the power steering rack normally has the fluid to assist it turn your wheels.

A manual rack has no fluid, it used a rack and pinion. So your turning the steering wheel is DIRECTLY linked to how much the wheel turns. There is no assist, only input that you put in. This makes the car easier to control because the steering input in linear. Where as with a power rack the assist varies between barely turning the wheel and having the wheel locked. DSMs are also notorious for having the steerign assist "fail" at low speed and high rpm. Basically all of a sudden your power rack is now an incorectly hooked up non power rack. Scary to say the least.

The manual rack came on 1.8 n/t 1g dsms. You can not get a manual rack for a 2g. As for what it is, if you look under your car attached to the subframe will be a tube looking thing(kinda looks like a shock). It will have lines attached to it that come from your PS pump.

Ok so this 1g n/t will fit in the 1g turbo awd? Is it hard to go to the junkyard and get it out in less then 2 hours. Junkyards lately have a lot of bee's or are swamped so i spending less time there now.

Wow an extra 15whp noticed on dyno. Yes I would take out the cruise control as well, and get the manual rack. Also this is aimed at people who have taking the PS completely out, the pulley stays on the engine so the serpintine belt can still be used, therefore the alt still works, right. Thats what Im assuming but i would just like to make sure.

Oh ok, Im going to have to go look at my engine tomorrow, I could have swarn I seen hoses from the ps Res going to just above the alt. and I know that the serpintine belt is attached to the alt, and what ever pump that is. Where is...or where was your ps pump jayrolla?

I talked to my local junky and they said the manual racks they have are all power. The said its just the jack and pinion. Turbo and N/T they said its all the same.

They are not all the same. Some 1.8 n/t came with power steering and some came with manual steering. No 2.0 cars(turbo and n/t) came with manual steering. The steering rack is different between the power steering cars and manual steering cars. Besides, who are you going to listen to, some low paid junkyard employee or a group of people that are dsm enthusiasts?

THE LOW PAID!!! LOL just kidding. I said manual steering on a 91 eagle talon or eclipse or laser. Should i try a 90 talon etc.... Now would this change or alter my steering colum as well or is it just the steering colum main bar then it goes to the pinions and sort of Tee's off if you were to draw it.

The only thing that would be changed is the rack itself and the rack mount. The tie rod ends, steering column, and steering shaft are all the same.

I just checked out autozone.com and they list both power and manual rack and pinion for a 91 eclipse made by atsco. The rack mount will have to come from a manual steering donor car or from the dealership.

I don't have the part number handy, but it is under $10 from the dealership including tax, if I recall right. It's the passenger side bracket. Everything else works across all 1g's, as far as the rack goes.

If you search you can find used racks for $100-200 depending on how much of a rush you're in. I think DSMgraveyard usually has one or two, but they're not as cheap as finding one at a junk yard. (price of convenience). As long as the boots on the manual rack are good, you can be 99.9999999% sure you won't have issues with it. Just make sure it's centered before you connect the steering column, LOL.

Oh, and it's 100x easier if the motor is out of the car, or even if just the head is off. The gap between the strut tower and the intake manifold makes it a bi*** to get the top bolt.

The motor is coming out of this car. So i will have all the room to do these things. Is removing the ps really a gain about now. Or even worth the money? Such small gains for such a un-needed peice but also the price is crazy.

Go to the junk yard and pull it out of a non turbo. Did you look at the link I posted. You dont have to buy it new from auto zone. You will have a better feel for the road, lose weight and gain 15whp from what someone else posted. Also you dont have to worrie about your PS going out or leaking. Cleans up the engine bay a lot also.

yeh i checked your link. Thanks for that. Now i think ill go and do this while everything is a part. Its a reg kind of thing and i guess best for me at this time. I hate when the belt squeels also. Now i talked to a friend who can get the thing out of the yard at a cheaper price. Stolen HEY i dont know but if he can get it i dont ask questions. thanks for all the help so far guys
