take the head out with the intake still attached?

yes its possible, just disconnect everything running to the head and IM and unbolt the head from the block and lift the whole thing off.
 
Well you can actually slide the belt off the gears, but of course you will need to redo the timing after. Id replace all the timing components if they have a good amount of miles on them.
 
Intake is like what? 2 clamps, MAF connector, and 3 vac lines? You free up a lot of room by removing it. If anything it'll make it easier for you in the long run.

what do you have planned for the removal?
ya its the intake manifold not not the cold air...
and for the removal i wana get the head checked out because im smokin alot from the exhaust and im thinking its my head gasket or bad valves or valve seals
 
I was wondering if you were talking about the manifold or intake pipe. Usually people keep the manifold on, but it's only like 9 bolts, fuel rail, couple dozen connectors, and a clamp I believe. If you don't have a cherry picker, it's best to get that 20lb manifold off and save your back.
 
under the IM there is a large bracket connecting it to the block. Should be 2 bolts under IM that connects it. Chances are you noticed it and disconnected it already but make sure either way or else the head wont lift off the block.

i dont think i disconnected it yet, ill check tomorrow..does it matter tho if ima take the head out with the IM anyway or would i still have to take out the bracket..
 
You have to unbolt the bracket, as it is a support between the block and IM. If you have head studs, I found it impossible to remove the head without bringing the IM with it. Couldn't get the IM past the studs on the head.
 
Personally I found pulling the IM and head as one piece easier after i found that bracket holding the IM. Took me a good 15 minutes to figure why the head and all was loose but it wasn't going any where, hard lesson learned.

i leave the manifold on when i pull the head. Yeah, dont forget about the bracket
 
+1 on leaving the IM bolted on. It helped me out when i took my head off before i yanked my motor out when i rebuilt it. It will give you one more place to hold on to when your taking your head out. It will be kind of odd taking it out initially but after that, its cake. :thumb:

This is off a non turbo'd motor but it is basicly almost the same but now you can see where its at and where the bolts are. same bolt pattern.

P.S. took me some time to find the freaking photo! LOL

head with the Intake manifold is how I always do it.

i found the bracket..im jst waiting for my brother to come and help me pull the head out..
the reason im taking it off in the first place is because it started smoking alot from the exhaust, and i did all the little stuff first, pcv, compression test, rebuild turbo etc. but still smoking. im thinking its eighter a head gasket, valve seals or bad rings because on piston number 3(even tho i rebuilt my motor 8kmiles ago) its very wet of oil..
any ideas?
ps; on the third exhaust port its full of oil too:confused:
