Henrdon,
All synthetic oil threads are merged here.i'm trying to buy a 1g dsm turbo awd (as i'm sure most of you know by now from my recent ramblings in other threads). Most of the ones i've been looking at are bone stock for the most part except repairs and i have a feeling all are running on regular oil.

my question is when i finally buy one should i run regular, full sythetic, or somwhere in between (i am planning on running full synthetic).

also, if the car is running regular and i want to switch to full synthetic, i've heard it can be damaging to switch all at once. or is that just a fable? it makes sense and i was planning on slowly uprading the oil quality everytime i changed it until it was running full synthetic. is that the wrong thing to do?

I didn't say I don't believe anything you post. I said I'd be interested in seeing the lab reports... Let me quote myself:

In my opinion, if you make statements regarding quality of any product, you should be able to back up your claims with some sort of solid proof. No one is required to believe that Yugo is the best car ever made or 13G is the baddest turbo out there - just because you said so. So it is in case of the Mobil 1 oil.
If you have the results of lab tests - as you claim you do, what prevents you from posting them? I believe many DSMers would find the info interesting and helpful...

Ive done several searches trying to find unbiased info about mobil1. But I cannot. Same goes for every other oil out there. Anyone find any real independent tests?

mech put regular oil in ym car didn't even tell me he was going to chagne it i run synethetic is this bad for the car? do i have to change it right away or what.... give me the low down

OH MY GOD....YOUR CAR IS GONNA BLOW UP....well probably not, but I would just drain it and fill it up with synthetic again, thats what I would do, dont know if its right though.

This is a prime example of why I do my own work. Draining and refilling pretty much is an oil change ('cept for filter), but you already paid for one...

Run it as long as you'd run any oil change, then -if you still think you want to- switch back to synthetic. They're fully compatible; they have to be.

No rock-worshipping Neanderthal ever had half so many superstitions about life and his place in it as contemporary man does about motor oils.

I was wondering what I would have to do to use synthetic oil from the regular oil. Someone told me that I have to do something to switch over to synthetic.
Thanks,

Well, you should first make sure you have no oil leaks. If you do, you will leak alot more using synthetic. Next, I would HIGHLY recommend flushing the engine when changing over. You can buy engine oil flush at Napa, Schucks, and other auto stores. After that, you should be gold. Check your oil frequently for the next few days to make sure your not leaking.

No you don't need to do anything special, drain the old oil and replace with new synthetic. Replace the oil filter and for the first night drive it around and then put a clean piece of cardboard under the car to see if the car leaks from anywhere.

How many miles do you have on your car?

I too would recommend flushing the engine out before hand. Then do the oil change with the synthetic oil and new filter, and lay a piece of cardboard under it.

I won't try to talk you out of it- it _is_ better oil. But for cars on the street, it's just not needed. The additive packages in modern engine oils are spectacular, even with turbocharging. Still not as good as true synthetics, but much better than the engine needs. I tried synthetics when they first came out, and had no complaints, but I've since just gone back to traditional. And I run oil about 6000 miles.

Most of what you'll hear about oils is myth.

it can cause leaks because it cleans the internals more and it can clean out dirt plugging up a leak therefore causing a leak

Guys, do yourselves a favor and read some credible information from knowledgeable sources on synthetic oil. Just about everyone has a cousin who knows a mechanic that told him how bad synthetic oil is. My own mechanic warned me that he knew a guy that put Mobile One in has racing engine and right away it blew. He rebuilt it, put in more Mobile One, and guess what? Yup, it blew again. This proves conclusively that synthetic is bad. Uh huh. You could probably make the same point that eating scrambled eggs for breakfast will cause your engine to blow.

“Yeah, yeah,” you say, “All that information comes from the oil companies.” Sure it does. So? They also make the petroleum oils which compete with synthetics. So whom do you believe? Your cousin’s friend’s mechanic? I say look at the high performance, high-tech users in racing. They don’t seem to have any problems with it.

I found out synthetic oil has tons of ball shaped molecules that are lined up perfectly while regular oil has molecules that are clumped together, so there for when synthetic is running through your engine, any little crack or hole will let the oil leak because it's molecules are so fine or "thin". For regular oil it's going to take a much lager crack before it's noticeable.

Synthetic is the way to go if you think you have an oil leak... Run synthetic and you will know for sure then. :)

Its better on the engine internals for synthetic oil is my personal opinion.
I use synthetic in my turbo'd car and regular oil in my NON-Turbo car. But sometimes I run synthetic every other 8 oil changes, just to kinda flush the system a lil bit in the n/t. But thats just me.

Theres like 50 threads on synthetic vs normal oil you may would like to hit a search on and check out tho. :)

*my imput*

I agree with defiant more tho. :|

So I just bought a 90 GS-T from a guy who used conventional oil, as he really didn't drive the car hard (he is a pastor and just had it as a commuter car), so he and his mechanic didn't think he needed to use synthetic. The motor does have some carbon build up. Should I go 1500-3000 miles with the high mileage detergent type oil that cleans out the motor, then switch to synthetic? Or, will it be ok to just go full synthetic?
