Henrdon,
All synthetic oil threads are merged here.i'm trying to buy a 1g dsm turbo awd (as i'm sure most of you know by now from my recent ramblings in other threads). Most of the ones i've been looking at are bone stock for the most part except repairs and i have a feeling all are running on regular oil.

my question is when i finally buy one should i run regular, full sythetic, or somwhere in between (i am planning on running full synthetic).

also, if the car is running regular and i want to switch to full synthetic, i've heard it can be damaging to switch all at once. or is that just a fable? it makes sense and i was planning on slowly uprading the oil quality everytime i changed it until it was running full synthetic. is that the wrong thing to do?

i tried that whole 6 month 5000 mile thing with royal purple... at about 4800 miles.. my engine siezed up because the oil had clumped up. might want to reconsider running your oil that long.

Oh? Do you really think you qualify for "severe" service? Still, if it's what you believe, there's no changing it on my part.

Interesting that under "Severe" they include "trailer towing", while under "Trailer towing", they say "Do not use your car to tow a trailer"

About 2 days ago I switched to Mobil 1 10w-30 fully synthetic with a Purolator Pure One filter. I read there was no harm dont in changing to synthetic. I dont know if this leak can be contributed to the oil change, but it may be. I found a small spot of oil under the car. So I go and check the drain plug and make sure the filter is on nice and tight. No problems there. But what I did notice was green fluid (coolant) and what looked like oil on the oil filter housing. I read about the water cooled oil coolers and how the coolant can mix with the oil IF the cooler itself is tightened down to tight. I never messed with the oil cooler itself. I wiped it clean and will check tomorrow to see if any new oil is there. Here's some pics.

Regular oil swells the seals of your motor, that makes the seals work better, synthetics tend to not act the same way and cause the seals to shrink, replace your oil with a sythetic blend and your problem will go away....believe me, ifound out with my B16 CRX that i nearly blew up cuz of MOBIL1 crap....also when you chnage your oil, be sure to rub some oil on the oil filter seal before you install it

It doesn't look too tough, it's fairly easy to get to, and if you find a non-crushed used one, you should be fine. Avoid a rusty one, but if it's been run with antifreeze, the other half's oil- it really shouldn't age much.

So show us your proof, that Mobil 1 is crap. You think your opinion is fact. It is not. In fact, you make youself look foolish, espically when you claim engine additives improve the performance of your car. If you do not have test results, dyno numbers or something to that effect. Then do us all a favor and... STFU.:thumb:

It would be nice, but I don't think igs is going to "teach" us anything. I mean, how much info could he possibly fit into a quasi-sarcastic one-sentence reply?

Amsoil is some of the best stuff you can use. Not saying anything else is crap though. Shell is good oil too. Of course this is what Ive always heard, anyone Ive talked too or articles I have read Amsoil is top notch.

The oils I would stay away from are quaker state and the cheap stuff you see for like 99 cents at gas stations and stuff.

Quaker State broke down in my grandfathers 18 wheeler. After I heard about that I would never put that shit in my car.

Well, he said he has results of lab tests proving that Mobil 1 is crap and Castrol and Shell are the greatest oils out there. I'd be interested in seeing the lab reports - if igs can provide them...
In my opinion, there's no crappy oil. What makes any oil crap is it's improper use in the wrong application. Just like using 87 octane gas in turbocharged or high-compression engine still doesn't make the gas crappy (but makes the owner of the car a dumbass), so it is with oils. JMHO.
