What kind of press do I need to eject the stock rubber mounts that are wedged into the oem mounting brackets? Are they tricky to pop out? Any suggestions or recommendations for removal and reinsertion?

^^ Great idea. I like that.

On a similar note; It's weird how much the level of vibration can vary from car to car. On my '99, I have solid aluminum roll stops and prothane on the sides, and it feels like stock rubber mounts. And my '95 had a prothane on the drivers side only, and it vibrated like hell at idle. On Dan's old 1G, his whole dash would vibrate and rattle. I can't explain the variance though.

After making my poly roll stops I think I figured out why our cars tend to shake so much especially motors with no balance shafts. The key is the roll stops, if you have poly engine and trans mounts they allow the motor to transfer a lot of vibrations through them because those mounts aren't enough to stop the motor from shaking. Now once you install a real poly roll stop, even just the front, those vibrations go away almost completely.

My dash used to shake and steering column too. Now that I installed my poly roll stops most of those harsh vibrations are gone. Who would have thought that another poly roll stop would lessen vibrations LOL

The poly mounts pretty much stop all rotational movement allowed by the mounts...that's why the car shakes so much. All of those vibrations are sent through a solid mount, so it shakes the car. The good part is all that power is planted to the ground instead of a partial bit of it lost due to motor mount flex. It also helps with wheel hop a bit too.

What exactly are you talking about the roll stops? Because i have poly mounts and my bs removed and my car shakes real bad. Its almost annoying. If you could show me a pic or what you are talking about for a fix. Thanks

Clearly the amount of vibrations felt varies from car to car (or maybe some of you guys are just babies LOL). I have all four Prothane mounts and removed balance shafts and don't even notice much in the way of vibrations. I love them. If you feel the vibrations are too much, just install the front and rear mounts (as they are the most important to keep the engine inline during acceleration OR modify them like Calan did for a softer ride. Also the initial vibrations felt when you first install them will diminish slightly after they "break in" a little.

Technically, the car only has two engine mounts, the transmission one and the driver's side one. The ones that attach to the front and back of the block or transmission (depending on generation) are roll stops, not engine mounts.

The problem is mostly with 2gs due to the fact that no company ever made a full polyurethane replacement for the front and rear mounts, we got those crappy inserts that fit around the stock mounts that truly do absolutely nothing! so the motor is basically hanging by the engine and trans mounts and shakes a lot.

you have a 1G with the poly mounts thats why it isnt an issue on your car, remove the front and rear mounts and start your car, and that how is would feel in a 2g

actually if your gonna go correcting people
2gs have 1 engine mount and 3 transmission mounts
1gs have 3 engine mounts and 1 transmission mount

the mount in the front by the radiator and in the rear, under the intake, are referred to as "Roll stops"

Actually, no. The two side mounts are engine mounts and the two front and rear are roll stops. The two on the sides physically hold in the engine, and the roll stops are purely there to work against torque. The two actual mounts tie into the actual frame, and the roll stops are only held by some cross-members. Transmission mounts are for RWD-oriented drive-trains.

well I have a 2g and I have 3 transmission mount brackets bolted to my transmission and 3 transmission mounts attaching my transmission to my car, and only one connected to my actual engine block.

At best as a compromise, you have one engine mount, one transmission mount, and two roll stops. But that one transmission mount is technically an engine mount.

Op I would highly recommend getting The front an rear roll stop/mounts from black_gst as well instead of using the Inserts for those from the prothane kit...

Edit: Was trying to help there slow posting But thought that was a :nono: posting links to your own classified Ads Regardless Freelancer or Not?

I probably have to deal with close the the most vibrations you probably could as I have a no Balance Shafts, solid front mount not the crappy front Incert 1gs get like the 2gs front an back (front mount is a Early curved front crossmember from Vassil) an ALL of the front of the cars bushings are either Energy Suspension or Prothane My Engine Mounts, Sub-frame bushings, Control Arms et cetra, an I dont think that it vibrates that bad at all I think some people just cant or dont want to deal with the 2k an 4k vibrations you get with No Balance Shafts to begain with.... IDK never bugged me

well its commonly referred to as an engine mount but technically its a transmission mount since its actually connected to the transmission. In stock form the roll stops limit the roll of the engine and transmission. The parts I make I'd call transmission mounts since they are solid they don't limit roll the completely stop it ROFL plus I make them and I can name them whatever I want :p but really its all just a play on words :p

oh I might have to re read the rules I don't remember the no linking to your own Ads rule, if that true ill fix it or a MOD can fix it.

regardless thanks for the recommendation do you have or know someone with a set of my roll stops?

Thats my understanding that we are not Vendors so no advertising outside the Classifieds IDK I hope Im wrong Lol

No not Yours personally

But, Ive seen others on the forum recommend them and your Original Feeler thread...

And have seen the benefits of not having the exrta movement myself if I had a 2g it would be first on my list of mods

well theres a pic of em there and the OP asked for a pic so maybe I wont get in trouble LOL

I was wondering because I have a buddy in Wa I thought maybe you knew him

Ive more then likely seen a few cars with them or do know someone with them an just don't recall LOL

My recommendation was base on the fact that any car is going to benifit from the reduced movement and someone should have made these long ago :) LOL

I test drove a 97 tsi awd last year, that had polyurethane engine mounts installed. I did not like it at all! Vibes just at street commuting speeds were annoying. Just seemed very buzzy. I dont know the performance advantages, but for me,, and a daily driver,, stock is better.
