Swapped engine and now tranny wont go into drive (Auto)

So I'm posting this for a friend.

Now this apparently happened twice to him. Both different cars. Basically bought a used 4G63 and dropped it into a 2G that had rod knock. Swapped the engines and suddenly the car will not engage on anything. I did a bit of searching and couldn't find anything that relates to this.

The first time he did this he never figured out what caused the tranny to not engage. Now he's done a engine swap again and is faced with the same problem. I have no clue on this.

Anyone got any ideas?

Had the same thing happen on a 140k automatic trans that broke a trans fluid line. After refilling it with fluid, the trans acted like it was in 3rd and reverse at the same time. Pulled it out and one of the clutch packs was so wornout it was stuck. All the material was chewed off the disc faces. But up until it lost the fluid it shifted fine.
