swap a gsx gas tank and run awd exhaust?

Why the hell would you want to run an AWD saddle tank? If you're looking into all that work, get a fuel cell.

It's not the gas tank that limits the exhaust on an FWD, it's the rear K member being so low to the ground.

Technically you'd be 1/3rd of the way done with an AWD swap if you dropped your FWD tank and modified your car to fit an AWD one. Might as well finish the rest of the conversion to AWD and run that sick exhaust, worth it! :thumb:

What gofer said. Sure do the gas-tank conversion. Then do the rear end swap. Then have the carrier bearing brackets and exhaust brackets welded in. So on and so forth. HKS Exhaust is very nice. Keep it waiting in the closest.

The hard part is going to be finding all proper parts to do the swap.

Andrew has a good point about the FF gas AWD gas tank. FF 2g Bolt In Fuel Tank

The only problem is the lead time is about 4 to 6 weeks the last I heard from Andrew at Frontline and that was for the rear diff cover, who knows what it would be for the tank?

Horrible saddle tank. LOL I love the fact that it "holds" 16.9 gallons of fuel according to Mitsu yet when I come rolling into the gas station bucking/hesitating on fumes I can only get 14 gallons in there. I swear an AWD DSM is the only car that will run out of gas and leave you stranded on the side of the road while there is still 3 gallons of fuel sloshing around in the tank...

Except for the weight distribution, the 1g tank location was a much better design.

The answer to your question is 'yes'. The GST tank is what prevents the AWD exhaust from fitting, so switching to a saddled AWD tank would allow it to fit.

But I also agree that unless you're going to do the full AWD swap, it's quite a bit of wasted effort just to be able to run a "neat" exhaust. And group me in the the "saddle tank haters club" too. I pulled mine out last year after buying a 10-gallon sumped cell, and I'm very much looking forward to no longer messing with the saddled tank ever again.

Well, its a stupid design. Look at this pic. Then tell me what you think

Fuel will pool on either side of the low parts. Unless you have at least half a tank your going to be sloshing fuel around starving the fuel pump in hard turns. Of course if your drag racing and don't care about weight its fine.

It is also pretty bad because you can only fit ~13.5 useable gallons of fuel in a 16.9 gallon tank. You could be running on fumes and still only fit 14 gallons in at a fillup station.

I always wondered if there is some safe, practical way to have a braided stainless hose between the two sides so that way it would be self leveling

I literally was just messing around with my awd fuel tank last night.. trying to siphon all the bad fuel out and install it in my Gst. I had to pretty much stand it on the "left" side to get all the fuel to the fuel pump hole where my hose was and had this exact thought!

Im sure there is a way this could be done! Maybe this winter Ill look into it and try it out!
