water in gas tank

The other day when i tried to go start my car it did absolutely nothing, just sputtered really hard, almost started but nothing. I Tried to let it sit and try again and i still got nothing. I didnt work on the car for 2 days cause it was raining really hard and i was busy with work. Tonight i finally got around to working on it and as i was looking things over i realized that my brother lost my gas cap and i completely spaced and forgot to get a new one (im new to oregon and they pump your gas for you here so i didnt see it). I opened up the fuel door and sure enough there is water pooled up in the filler neck, im not sure how much got in there or what exactly i need to do to fix the problem. Would siphoning the tank be enough or shoud i drain it and run gas through it for a while with the injectors off to clean it out? Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

well drain it out and put in gas and see if it runs. by cranking it with water entering the cylinders you could have bent a rod. but if it starts and theres a lot of smoke let the smoke run out and just listen for a rod knock. hope everything is all good though

hmm, i was kinda hoping a fuel injector wouldnt be able to spray enough water to fill a cylinder that much

You're not going to hurt anything with that amount of water.
Park the car on a level surface, open the fuel line and jump the pump into a gas can. Let it take out about four gallons. You should replace the filter, but you might get away without it. Put in a bottle of gas treatment -one designed to remove water from the fuel system- and take it easy for a few tanks. Use the treatment at every fill-up.
There shouldn't be very much water in there just from missing a cap, unless it's been really, really heavy there. You should come through okay.

well there has been record rain fall and seattle (2 hours north) has been having lots of flooding.
But i know what you are saying, i think it wil be just fine, thanks for the advice man.

A few bottles of heat/water remover wouldn't hurt either.
