i just picked up a 1990 eclipse gsx a couple days ago, it ran awsome drove it all around town, it was running perfect. when i whent out around 10 pm and i started it up and it was making a realy loud squeely noise, and when i would poke at the throttle wit my foot it would do it up untill 1500 rpm when driving it it would not do it only when at idle. i got a 90k service done on it, and they said the noise isnt coming frome the belts (like i thought)all the belts looked brand new , it sounds like its coming from the water pump, the said it sounds like a bearin, because when at idle you can hear i slight grinding sound and some times a loud sound. so with this realy crapy discription can anyone give me an answer on what they think it is? thanks. i plane on buying a new water pump, timing belt and tensoner on monday.

I'll PM you on DSMParts.com

Now about timing.

In an old thread I have a list of parts you need, as well as the timing assembly WITHOUT the timing covers.

This is a COMPLETE walkthrough on how to do a timing belt change. You can't get much complete then this one.

These guys sell a tool to help adjust the timing belt tensioner pulley. I haven't used it, but wish I had something like this to help me do it.

Also here is the tensioner tool.

Thats's everything you need to do it yourself.

Don't forget about these. These were NOT in the thread I referenced and I just added them.

so I got my timing belt, timing belt tensioner, balance shaft belt, balance shaft pully and water pump intalled today, so as I was driving it home and my idle was at 500 rpm when normaly around 800 to 900 rpm, and Inoticed the motor was shaking the car every coupl secounds, somtimes acting like it wanted to die. then I noticed when I would come up to a stop sign/light I would take it out of gear and begin to break, while i was stoping the rpms would like surge kinda moving from 1000 to 2000 rpm till I came to a complete stop and then the idle would be messed up again. the needle wouldnt move when idle but your can he hear the motor struggle. any advice would help alot, thanks

i do know that if the balance shafts are out of phase the car will shake. it should shake horrible bad tho if i remeber correctly. it is possible to have ide surge i had that wasn't fun. i would take off the intercooler piping and spary some carb cleaner into the intake manifold. i also blocked off my erg valuve and it went back to normal. hope this helps

my local guy did the job, and when I took it back to him because of the crappy idle he started to mess BISS screw, yea it got the idle back to were it should be but the idle was still messed up. its making a studdering sound every couple secounds when at idle and you can see the motor move when the studdering is going on. and the car us still surging while stoping when out of gear. what could he have messed up? im taking it back on monday

sry, its been a couple days but everything is fixed now!!!! some how the timing got advanced, so the had to reatard tha timing a little bit and that solved the prob!!!!!! the spark plugs look great. thanks for all the help.

HAve you rechecked your cam timing. An intake cam gear that has jumped forward a tooth will muff up the ignition timing pretty bad.

Or possibly, the cam timing was off in the first place and someone adjusted the cas to "make" the ignition timing correct. And the recent timing belt job corrected the cam timing and threw the ignition timing off.

This happened w/ me.
