I am looking at buying this car, Its a 1g awd. However it is very hard and I mean I have to pull really hard to move the shifter towards myself to be able to push it forward into first. It moves really slow too. Also when I try to move it to the right to go into 5th or reverse it is very hard to move. Another thing is the shifter doesnt center itself up after i let go of it in neutral. What do you guys think?

look under the hood where the shifter linkage is and make sure it is a tight. then look under the shifter boot and se if anything is bent.

Could very well be in the tranny (syncros etc.). However check on vfaq how to properly align the shifter under the boot. Sometimes misalignment isnt noticed just by looking at it. Also it could be the master or the slave cylinder. Ask the owner lots of questions. Replacing a tranny isnt to hard. However finding a good used one or buying a new one might be in the future.

Check the shift levers on the trans. If they are bent it wil cause symptoms similar to what you are describing, although for me it was only to the left. I would look into binding of the shift cables, 2G cables are not adjustable but I'm not sure about 1G cables.

Syndicate,
so you actually had to replace one of the shifters on the tranny? Or did you just bend it back to where it was supposed to be?

I was replacing my trans with another and I knew mine was good so I just swapped them. I suppose with a calibrated wrist you could bend it back into place. Of course you'll need to know what it's supposed to look like in the first place.

Not the you a noob with cars or anything but make sure you have plenty of fluid in your reservoir.

While that is a good idea, it will have no effect on his current problem. I'm betting broken lever, cable, or possible something internal to the trans. Hard to tell over the internet without any additional information.
