I need to replace my original exhaust system on my 1G GSX. The car has no mods and I'm not planning on any and I still want to run a cat. All the downpipes I see are 3" except for the VRS 2.5". All cat-backs I see are 3" and I'm concerned about boost creep. Also, I'd rather keep a stock looking muffler, but I might consider the Thermal. I know about porting the O2 housing but I'd rather not deal with that. I'm looking for bolt-on solution.

I could get a complete exhaust system fabricated at an exhaust shop but it seems no one around here has a mandrel bender.

So I think my options here are 1) Getting a complete exhaust system fabricated at a shop and not worry about press/ crush bends, 2) Getting the VRS 2.5" downpipe as it is mandrel bent and having a shop fabricate a 2.5" cat-back and not worry about the press/ crush bends, or 3) Get the VRS 2.5 downpipe, a cat, and a 3" Thermal cat-back but again, should I be concerned about boost creep with this set-up and running a cat?

Which would you guys recommend? Or do you have any other solutions that I haven't thought of?

What are you looking for?

Do you want a stock replacement?

Do you want performance?

Do you have goals of 250, 300, 400 hp?

This will help us tailor our responses to you.

As stated in my first paragraph, the car is stock and I'm not planning on any mods. All I want is a stock replacement exhaust system. If Mitsubishi still had exhaust system parts in stock, I would buy them but nothing is available anymore.

It's funny. I am sort of in the same boat. I just checked the classifieds for the same thing. I need a stock-ish exhaust so I can get through NJ emissions. I run 3" no cat...

I'm trying to decide what to do about that. If I should get a hi-flow cat installed on my 3" or try to find a stock exhaust to bolt on for a little bit. This thread is making me thing that I should go for the cat splicing option.

Good luck finding what you need. Possibly put up a WTB ad?

Sorry I couldn't be more help.

I'm a bit confused, you say your looking for a stock replacement , but you mention a thermal catback in your first post.

What is the reasoning behind you looking for a different exhaust ? Is your current one broken , missing , rusting ?

What are you looking for out of a replacement ?
If your looking for a factory Exhaust to slap up there than go to your local salvage yard or hit up a vendor on here- MIP has a fairly decent amount of dsm's on his lot.

You could probably ebay a 2.5 inch downpipe and catback,2g o2 housing. Then for stock looking muffler,I know vibrant makes some dual tip mufflers..

The stock 1g exhaust snakes down to 2 inches at the flex pipe on the downpipe. If your gonna do it, replace the whole thing, and be done with it.

Price options are gonna kill you,so beware.

I would just splice in a cat and have a test pipe fabbed up if I were you.

The reason for replacement is because my exhaust is falling apart; flex pipe leaking, muffler slip joint rotted out, etc.
All the eBay downpipes Ive seen are 3". The only 2.5" downpipe I can find anymore is the VRS and it's $250 but I can deal with that. I could probably salvage my muffler and have it welded up to a new slip joint pipe section. That leaves the mid pipe which I'd prefer to be mandrel bent 2.5" but no one around me has a mandrel bender.

I mentioned the Thermal because it would be mandrel bent but its 3" so I'm concerned about boost creep. I plan on running a cat and a 2.5" downpipe. I prefer the stock twin tips look though. I forgot but my car does have a 2g exhaust manifold but I don't think that would have any effect on boost creep concerns.

Will I get boost creep with 2.5" downpipe, a cat, and 3" cat back and 2g exhaust manifold? Probably? Hard to say?

I'll check out miller import parts.

SR.S is a good after market exhaust and you won't break the bank. You'll lose the stock look, but the SR.S has stock fitment.

I believe Pacesetter makes a factory replacement exhaust along with a few lesser known company's.

They only have cat backs and only for 2wd.

It has stock fitment but it's a 3" pipe. I'm looking for 2.5" to avoid boost creep.

Before i suggest, It cant be loud ? Do you need it to sound stock as well?

If you are looking for a stock sized exhaust, just go to rockauto, advance auto parts, auto zone, o'reilly, nappa, anywhere else you buy other stock parts.

I'd prefer it sound stock but a bit louder is ok too.

Nope, none of those places have downpipes or mid-pipes for 1G AWD.

Intermediate Pipe

Bosal 889-137

Cat

Bosal 099-847

It does seem that Bosal does not offer the AWD downpipe though, so you are right there.

For that, I suggest you just go on ebay or search craigslist or classifieds, and get a 2.5" or 2.25"(if you can find one). Either of those should bolt up to your stock cat. With the cat in place and working properly (i.e. NOT gutted), it won't matter what size downpipe you have because it will restrict and muffle any sound increase that comes from the larger downpipe.

I was wrong about the intermediate pipe as Bosal has them. I was too concentrated on the downpipe. Thanks!

Get a decent high flow cat. It will pass emissions and still make power with a 3" exhaust.

I have no mods, only a stock 2g exhaust manifold which isn't even a mod, so I'm sure I'll get boost creep running a 3" exhaust. Even with a stock downpipe or 2.5" downpipe, a cat, and with a 3" cat-back, I'll get boost creep, right?

Consider calling RRE - they built me a complete 3" exhaust system for my Talon and it fits perfect and sounds really good. It uses a Magnaflow muffler. If you don't plan on doing any other mods, why not just run a full 2.5" system? If you're planning more mods later, then stop worrying about the temporary boost creep issue.

I wasn't aware RRE made custom exhausts. I thought it was just what they had on their site. I was considering the 2.5" VRS system but kind of leary on how it would fit with the Magnaflow muffler I wanted being that it sits at an angle in order to point straight out back and ordering it online. It would be better if I could bring the car in for them to fab up an exhaust but they're in Florida.
