2G Subwoofer setup

Has anyone had any success with installing a 12" Pioneer subwoofer and amp system in their 2G? If so what was your setup and what gear did you buy? I've worked only vaguely with amps and sound systems and I have no clue what I should be looking for or buying as far as a subwoofer system, speaker system for the front doors and rear and a stereo setup

Here are a few components I found that I considered for purchase, but nothing is set in stone. What would you guys recommend?

I'm about to start working on this myself haha. I've been installing audio equipment for awhile and my suggestion is to save the money and buy a good sub. Make a good strong box yourself and be sure to wire it well with whatever amp you choose(I went dual for now R.I.P. sony amp ). PERSONALLY, I'm going with a single 10-inch kicker as anything else for such a small car feels like overkill to me. I also have Pioneer Speakers with tweeters built in (just to hold me over till I can figure out how to get the tweeters in teh dash to work. HOWEVER, it's YOUR build and at the end of the day, you should do whatever is going to put the biggest smile on your face.

I mean, I don't fully understand the amp and speaker lingo or fully-fledged technology (I'm an innovations driveline engineer ) so if you have a setup that you think is good I'd be honored if you'd share it with me so I can at least follow your steps and see how you did it. I'm not even sure I can wire the thing up so I might find somewhere to do it for me

But I plan to make the enclosure and choose the setup of where everything goes and how it'll all work. I'm just looking for guidance as far as what is considered a solid speaker system, amplifier and subwoofer. Are there any brand names or models that you personally like the sound of? I'm looking for a system that will cope well with bass-oriented music (I've even come up with a YouTube playlist of good 'street racing' music )

How does the setup sound to you? I've read that the 12" adds more boost and definition, but as B00stAddictedGsx said that might be overkill in a smaller car like a 2G ...

I personally use a 1500 watt Rockford amp with a power T2 15" Rockford sub in a 5 1/2 cu ft box ported and love it of course I go to competitions for mine

It's sound great to me it's a quality sub so I don't ever turn it up a lot. Perfect sound depending on what sub and amp u have. My friend has two 12 in his 2g and it's way too loud even at low. The base is high and he dosent have a trunk at all with the subs. My sub box is ported also

best advice I can offer is go for something you want, do you want deep heavy bass, or something light to give music a little pep to it? are you going to competitions or just daily fun? do you want just bass or crystal clear highs or all around performer? every install is always gonna be different as we all have different tastes. of course yopu gotta ask what your budget is too but go for what you like and remember a well built walmart system will sound better than a poorly installed high end system. sound systems are 30% equipment and 70% install.

As for my setup I'm looking for clarity and crispness with mid-heavy music because I like metal and rock and so that's a lot more mid and guitar-based lows. But I also like blasting bass-heavy music like Bassnectar and some dubstep and so in those cases the bass is electronic and so needs to be fairly punchy and have some presence (blasting bass music whilst blazing down a highway whilst the exhaust is roaring and the bov is sounding off and the turbo is spooling up is just eargasmic to me ). My budget is around $500.

I want a decent system that performs well, but I'm not looking to do comps or anything like that. I want something that sounds good, performs well and looks clean without taking up too much room. A setup like in the picture I posted would be ideal ^^^

I would look at component speakers if possible get a nice 4 channel to run power to all the door speakers and then get a 12 or a 15 for bass with a good mono block amp and if possible get the 4 channel a class AB amp and the mono sub amp a class D and for added clarity look into a good headunit for tuning with 4 volt rca outputs and even a passive crossover to help tune the signal even more those are what I would look for

I have 2 kicker comps in a homemade sealed box and 1000 watt Sony amp. I built mine to be removed easy for drAg days. Alpine 6x9's and whatever's size in the doors forget . Also a alpine head unit and I love the way it sounds. Hits hard and clean inside and not super loud outside. I hate drawing attention and like clean crisp sound. Have had that setup for like 10 years haha.

Dang, I just have stock speakers with a Kicker 10" sub box with a built in 100w amp ($100 - criagslist) under convertible boot and that's plenty loud (the bass can be turned up obnoxiously loud) for me.

That said, I just purchased a used four channel 800w Pyle amp to help even out the system and a used Sony bluetooth CD head unit to replace my cheapy (but quite decent!) XOvision XD 107 ($20 @ Walmart) deck.

Anybody have any contemporary recommendations for rear speakers that will fit a 2g Spyder? There are some older threads but I'd love to be able to find something currently available.

RaptorAnderson--That deck is over priced in that link. I have the avh-x2800bs in my truck and it's a pretty good deck. The app radio function of it was not what I expected though. I've never been a fan of Pioneer subs, there are better that are similarly priced. Check out Sonicelectronix.com, they have better prices on stuff, Crutchfield is among the highest priced. Also, I like to keep with the same brand speakers and equipment or just a couple, your list seems to be all over the place. Also when you look at amps and speakers, you have to pay attention to their RMS rating and what that rating is at what resistance.

Drop Top--Rear speakers are just for fill, focus more on getting good front speakers. I'd throw a set of quality 3 way 6x9s in the rear with a set of components in the doors. If you're Sony deck is fairly new it should have crossovers in it to help you tune the system.

I have 2 JL audio 6w3 subs, which are their 6.5" sub, in sealed boxes. Has a tight, clean hit to the lower notes and are at 500 RMS each so there still is loud enough if you really need it. They're more than enough bass but i wish I got 8" sub because you can tell these dnt have enough surface area to really hit the frequencies below 44hz. At least they're really small and take up no room in the trunk.

I think any sub of your choice will do as long as the amp can handle it, due to our cars having a very small cabin. Also get a deck with features you like. 2 USB ports, Bluetooth, pandora, aux port, etc are all nice options that will make you love your sound system more since you can control it all from there

I bought a box set, it came with the pioneer avh-2800bt, two 6.5's for the doors and two 6x9's for the back. All pioneer. Then I got two 4 inch pioneer bullets for the dash. Finally I put two 10 inch infinity subs, in a prebuilt that consumes my entire hatch, powered by a JL Audio 500/1. Needless to say, it's a little overwhelming. Look into one of the box sets pioneer makes, they seem to be quality.

I use an alpine headunit that powers alpine 6.5 speakers in the front doors and 6x9's in the rear. All of those speakers are from their type-s product line (not sure if they are still available or not since my system has been in the car for 14 years). In the trunk, I have an Infinity 12" sub powered by a 700watt Infinity amp. It seems to be a very well balanced setup that works well with all types of music. It can get as loud as you can stand too if you really want it to.

When I put my 2 10s in the back of my car I replaced my 6x9s with round 6 inch in a 6x9 bracket. It makes the sound a lot less distorted. I went with all Kenwood excelon speakers in my car but whatever you want is up to you.

10" kicker in a ported box is what I run.. I actually don't care for ported boxes, but this small car space is my exception for that. Kicker 500w mono D class amp to a 10" old school kicker with real rubber surround not the newer garbage foam surrounds they changed over to for on the shelf stuff. Look out for newer kickers using foam surrounds just a heads up it sucks, I think the top of the line subs they still make use rubber but nothing else anymore. Sad.

i actually use to build competition subs for people. (not just the enclosure, i mean actually building up the sub from the magnet, coils, soft parts ETC)

i run an 8" sub in a ported box, a 4 channel MMATS amp, 2 MMATS coaxials with crossovers in the doors, and a JVC KD-X340BTS for a head unit. DO NOT use the head unit to power any of the speakers, run the preouts to the amp, power the doors off the front 2 amp channels, bridge the rear 2 amp channels to power the sub. set the amp as a nearly pass through set up and use the head unit to tune. (that head unit has enough adjust ability for 90% of people.

i have driven people out of this car and NO ONE has ever believed it was an 8" sub till i showed them. also do NOT put anything in the back speaker location, they distort the sound field as the car is too small for 4 speakers. the clarity of the highs is so good at full tilt vocals are perfect, and there is more base than kids with their audio shop memphis garbage. (i DESPISE Memphis and JL, pioneer and Alpine are O.K. but not competition grade, Kicker and the walmart sony stuff are good for low budget builds. Sony makes a high end line but it is hard to find.)


NOTE: for people looking for subs and amps i recommend sundown audio, C2 audio, MMATS, some of the RE stuff is nice, if you need low cost i would go Pioneer, RockfordFosgate, sony.

Hey Zedicus, what would you recommend for a good value setup that wont include an amp (door and rear speakers plus head unit)? I just want something that can play all sorts of music but won't have the weight of amp and subwoofer. I doubt I'll play it super loud like I did when I was younger. Thanks.

for a light weight but still good sounding system i would run something like this

then gut all the door and dash speakers and wiring and JUST wire in what is needed. even with the small amp you will save some weight and this 2 speaker system will sound better than any 4 speaker and small sub system your friends will ever come up with. plus you are only buying 2 speakers so even though they seem kind of expensive your overall all cost for this system won't be that high. about 700$ for a blutooth capable system with USB and some actual sound quality parts that you will truly be amazed with.

so i am saying run the preouts to the amp, and the amp to the 6x9s and only use 2 speakers, do not run anythinng off the deck. get rid of all the wiring and old speakers out of the dash and doors entirely.

again these cars are too small to really utilize 4 speakers. unless you went highs up front and lows in back but it would take a 4 channel amp and not a head unit only to power that stuff. if you run a sub in these cars run the door speakers and dash speakers or coaxials in the doors and no dash speakers.

OR run a rear speaker system only with no speakers in the dash and doors, and no sub.
