I would say more then likely that is a dual voice coil sub & yes you have to hook up both sides. Make sure you check the resistance of each coil and wire them up for the correct ohm load depending on the amp you choose to run. As for enclosure I prefer sealed over ported, I like tight bass & if your running a descent sub you can still get lots of bass out of a selaed enclosure plus like has been said a sealed enclosure will be smaller for the same sub. As for base how much do you really want? I origionally had 2 12's in my car but I would rather have a quicker car then all that extra weight. If you check my profile I have some pics of my fiberglass enclosure. It works great for me, still have a useable trunk & is much lighter then mdf. Even with my one 12 there is more then enough bass for me. When its turned up I can rattle all the panels in the car & you can see the hatch glass moving & the rear wiper jumping off the window from behind the car. If the sub is still good & it is an old w3 they were a descent sub at the time, it should give you lots of base. I would go sealed with that as the older JL's seemed pretty loose and boomy already. If you tested the sub without an enclosure or an improper sized then yes it would sound like crap, it amazing how much of a difference on output a proper sized enclosure makes. I run a sony mobile es amp that is 430 watts rms (800 or 900 watts peak which is a useless number anyways)
