stripped threads on head

I recently got a new head because my other one was junk. I was tightening the exhaust manifold to the head and one nut wouldn't tighten, it would just turn and turn and turn. (This also cause a loud exhaust leak) So I took off the exhaust manifold and the stud on the head just slid right out. The threading inside the head got stripped. What can I do about this? I heard you can put new threadings inside the head, but I'm not too sure what that tool is called. Also what size stud should I use now? The stock one is too small to fit, it would just slide out. Please let me know. Thanks.

You can try using a Heli-Coil

I've never used them on a car but have replaced streetbike and dirtbike exhaust stud threads with them and never had a problem.

+1 on the heil coil.

The way I see it you have two other options:
1: drill it and retap for a larger stud, this would also require drilling the manifold.
2: get a new head.

It is also going to mater as to wich stud striped because a few of them are in oil galley and will leak if heil coiled.

If it is not a galley studd I would recomend heil coil.
If it is in an oil galley the you will have to drill for a larger stud and re-tap (will require removing head you will have to clean out the oil galleys compleetly or you will have shavngs in the head).

Good point about the oil galley. I thought only the center one on the bottom went into an oil galley though?

It's the bottom one second to last towards the passenger side.
I will not get a new head because I just got this one..

Hope you have a strong drill to hellicoil that, drive car to machine shop remove manifold, ask guy who repairs thread holes to do it. They used a bearing instead of helicoil.

i had this happen to me and i did it 3 times think i would learn after the first i know but use a Heli-Coil they work great thats what i used

Drilling aluminum is very easy, i drill the 2g headbolt holes out for 12mm studs all the time. How would you use a bearing for stud threads?

no one told me this when I asked before. So which studs have the oil galleys? So youre telling me I cant helicoil all of them?

How strong does helicoil hold? I'm thinking that mine are already helicoiled as I can only tighten the nuts so much then it just feels like the just want to pull out....

If they are installed properly they can be as strong as the original threads.

Ok so it turns out that all the studs needed tightened. But this then brought about another issue. How far is the bottom middle stud suppose to thread in? It seems to just keep on going in deeper and deeper. I know that this is the oil galley one so how far does this go? It's also been helicoiled....

Just thread it in until you know that all the threads are threaded through. If you get what I mean.

If you know that the threads go into the head 1/4" then thread the stud in just a little over 1/4"

I had the same exact thing happen on my head i've got now. I just tapped them a little bit over and they it worked perfectly.

That's what normally is suppose to happen but this stud is the oil galey one and just keeps on going in...
