I'm new to the dsm world. I just bought a 91 talon tsi awd and am already strongly considering selling it. Number one I'm hearing sounds from the tranny I didn't notice before but thats another issue. The thing I don't understand is that when I'm at around 70 mph I'm hearing a high pitched whine coming through the dash that gets more high pitched the more i push on the throttle. It also here feedback when the radio is on. That increases as well when the throttle is increased. Any suggestions as to what that is would be appreciated. Also when I let of the throttle that noise goes away but is replaced by a sound of something that has the same undulation as a flat tire, but sounds like a mild grinding or rubbing. I'm guessing its linked to the tranny problems that I see rising in the futre. I think I'm going to get rid of the car anyway before problems become serious but I'm curious to know what those sounds might be. Thanks-

the sound is your throw out bearing in your clutch system. if its a standard tranny. if its automatic it could be your tourqe convertor.. as for the stero its either now properly grounded or its picking up noise from the electrical system. try replaceing the spark plug wires and make sure all your grounds are properly grounded.

personally my dsm is in the middle of a rebuild and i drove my friends the other day.. and it made me want to get mine done all the faster.. these are fun and farily dependable rides.. and they are a hell of a lot of fun to drive.. dont give up yet.

thanks for the reply but I'm a little confused. Is it the high pitched whine that is the throw out bearing or the rubbing sound, or is it one and the same? In regards to me selling the car, it is fun to drive and the most powerful car I've owned but being a college student I don't think I have the funds to maintain it. Also where i live gas prices are rediculous, and watching how much quicker I burn it in this car than other cars I've had makes me think now is not the time to own a car like this.

In regards to the stereo problem, does the noise coming from the speakers get higher in pitch when the rpm's go up? If so, this is called "alternator whine" and is a pretty common problem in the car audio world. Like was said before, find a different/better ground and it should solve that.

Have your transmission gone through. I can't tell you what it is that's wrong with it, but when they are making noises like that, it generally means they are getting ready to shit their fluid all over the roadway.
