Strange noise like flat tire.

I took my car on a trip a week ago it was three hours one way and three hours back. The car ran great for the most part. I was about 10 miles from home on the freeway doing 70 when I had to get off so I exited and when I got to 3rd gear I heard this noise exactly like a flat tire coming from the rear. So I pull over expecting to see a flat and nothing. So I thought maybe my imagination. I take off again and the noise happens again along with a vibration now not to much and just was getting worse and worse. So I parked it and came back in the morning. I started it up and drove fine until I was a block from home and the sound started again and feels like almost if the brakes are holding the car back like sluggish feeling. At low speeds 1-3 miles per hour I hear squeaking as if the brakes are metal to metal. So I took off the rear wheels and the brakes look fine. What else could it be? I have a 92 Laser AWD.

It can be Ill try that. Could it just be low on fluid?

\You cood have atire wit the belts seperating. Sounds like your problem. Go to a tire shop and have them check the balance on your rear tires. If it is bad it will show up on the balancer.

a bad wheel bearing will have the same symptoms ! jack it up and check to see if the wheel wobbles .

Sounds more like a wheel bearing to me. Does it seem to disapate at all if you turn one way or another? That could help diagnose which side it is. The way you turn and it gets quieter is the side its on(turn left and quieter-left side bearing/turn right and quieter-right side bearing)

had similar problem and it was the wheel bearing. drove me nuts for a week.

So I checked the wheel bearings and they are fine. So I checked the rear diff and there was metal shavings on the drain plug. Nothing to serious. Put in new gear oil. I noticed when I get about 25 mph the sound starts and also when I turn either way the rear wheels lock up but when I straighten out they are fine. I dont know what else it could be.

After hours of research I have narrowed it down. I am 90% sure it is the viscous coupler. My car has all the symptoms of a faulty VC, the only problem is I dont know where to buy another one. Or how I should go about fixing this problem.

So it wasnt the viscous coupler. Maybe center diff. I dont know anymore. Stupid car.
