My stock turbo was trashed when I purchased the car. I dont have the money for a ton of upgrade parts. What turbo/ manifold combo can I run with the posibility of later making more power with the correct upgrades.
 
Buy another 14b. It's cheap, bolt in, and you need a known good variable to a new car that you don't know what is wrong with yet. For all you know, something else screwed up the turbo and if you were to spend a lot of money only to have that one thrashed, you'd be really pissed. First get the car back to a stable state, then worry about upgrades. Fill out your profile too. Hard to give advice when we don't know what you have already.

Just a thought but a Evo3 16G and a 2G manifold could be a cheap option. If you want a 2G manifold, I have one I can let go of cheap.

x2. That's what I'm running. Spools fast, perfect for a DD car, gets up and goes and is quite a big difference from the 14b.
I'd recommend NOT getting it off Ebay (GT one). You get what you pay for :p
 
Get another 14b. You can run 12s with one. I purchased a 7cm exhaust housing for mine and you can feel the difference, especially top end.

(note - I'm not saying that by adding a 7cm housing that you will run 12s, much more is required to do so.)
 
But can you run a 16g with no supporting mods. P.S. Turbo has ton of shaft play and the seals are bad.

Are you planning on making this a DD car, or just a fun weekend car, or eventually track car?
Is this for the Laser?
Like I said before, what is your budget that you're looking to spend?
I'm sure we can help you alot better knowing that.
 
D/D plus a little track time, 10 miles to the gallon on a good day in my truck is killing me.
 
Sorry current budget is in the $500.00 to a $1000.00 range. And its for the Laser

well if it helps:
Used 14b ~ 100-150$
Used 16g ~ 300$
Used fuel pumps ~75$
Injectors~ 175-200 (vary by size)
AFC ~ 100
2g manifold ~ 30

A 3" exhaust would be a good idea too. You can find a used one for 2-300$

Later on, it would be a good idea to get a clutch/ flywheel
You can also find these used for ~400 for the pair.

My pricing may be a bit off, but this is about what I found. Search the classifieds on talk/ source.
 
And what supporting mods do you mean?

Exactly.... just don't push more air flow than your fuel system can support and you don't need anything except for a boost controller (Voodoo III MBC for $20 off eBay) and a boost gauge ($50 from glowshift). Just slap that sucker on and have fun.
 
best for buck go for a 2g mani and find a good 14b. should be well in your budget and wouldnt limit you when you start upgrading.
a bigger turbo shouldnt be your first mod. get your car running right then go fast like ricky bobby.

Yup, that's correct. I'm currently running a V-Trim turbo on a stock fuel system. Keeping the boost around 10-12 PSi until I get a fuel system. Car runs great.

1. Did you just recently buy the car?
2. Have you done all of the maintenance?

Blowing a lot of cash towards upgrades is pointless if his car breaks down 3 months later and can't afford to fix it because he spent all of his money on a turbo and go fast parts. Set your foundation and once you have a good reliable DD, then determine your budget. My $0.02

True. I assumed that the car has had all it's basic maintenance done already. If not, then you you are 100% correct.

Thank you. I thought I expressed this in my first post but everyone jumped on the buy this turbo bandwagon. It's real easy for one of our cars to cost upwards of $1000 to fix something. I bought mine and didn't touch a thing except for maintenance. I spent $1000 between parts and labor and misc things to fix up my engine just to have the crank walk 6 months later. Now I've shelled out an additional $5k for a 6bolt. That's why I'm reticent to say spend your money on XXX when the answer is usually, spend your time researching a good mechanic if you aren't one and get your car up to par. Then worry about go fast.

You don't need a boost controller to achieve stock boost levels. A boost controller isn't going to help you lower boost. Run a the stock BCS set up and you'll be fine on boost level.

Also true, but the 16G will outflow the 14B at the same boost setting. So he may wish to turn down the boost.
