Ok so i'm not real sure if this is the correct thread to put this in but if a moderator needs to move it so be it.
Here's my issue, I bought a '91 AWD Tsi a while back and took out a lot of stuff to check hoses and such for cracks and also fix smic fins etc etc. When I bought the car it had a lot of oil all over the valve cover and down all the way to the turbo, I wasn't sure if the oil was coming from both the valve cover and the turbo or just vavle cover. So I replaced the valve cover gasket and cleaned off all the oil everywhere.
My issues comes when I tried to take the exhaust mani off and the turbo, some of the studs are stuck in the block and I twisted a head clean off with some of the stud still in the block, these things were extremely rusty and I used some rust spray to try to loosten things up, auto-x is coming up and I really want to put this stuff back together but I'm not well versed in fixing broken studs.
I'm sure someone on here knows how to fix my issue with the studs, anyone have any suggestions?
Also there is a seal for the 14b turbos I think, (don't flame if i'm wrong :) ), will this cause oil leakage if bad or broke? How much do they cost to replace and is it difficult to replace?
Also is it wise to put a new mani gasket on the car because of all the leaking oil or should I not even mess with it?
I really just want to make sure i'm not going to have any leaks or loss of oil all over my engine.

Thanks. :talon:

For the cost of rebuilding the turbo and rebalancing it, you are better off just getting another 14b and selling yours. They go on ebay for around a hundred bucks, but if you want to rebuild itll cost you at least 80 for the parts, and around 40 for the balancing + labor to put the parts in.

I am confused on what you mean when you say "some of the studs are stuck in the block and I twisted a head clean off with some of the stud still in the block". Assuming you mean you got half of a bolt out with the other half inside, you have to drill it and retap it, which is going to be a pain, you are better off taking it to a machine shop.

So you think the turbo is bad then? Kinda what I thought but I wanted to get some other peoples' opinion.
Yeah you understood right, the nut that I was taking off in front of the exhaust manifold that screws onto the stud in the head came off without the stud and took some of the stud with it. Is there anything dsmers recommend for really extremely rusting nuts/bolts that's been proven to work?
My father has been a mechanic for 26 years but I try to do everything myself, I was pretty sure when this happened that I wouldn't be able to do it myself haha, oh what fun I'm in store for!
Well I thank you for your input napkinthief hehe that's a kewl name.
If anyone else has any input please let me know.

What kind of rust spray? Use PB Blaster. Spray the studs down, let it sit for a few hours, spray them again, let it sit overnight. Try it again in the morning. If there is still stud sticking out of the head, which from your description seems to be the case, grab some locking/vice grip pliers, tighten them down to the point that you can barely squeeze them shut around the stud, twist, then repeat until they've dug into the stud enough that you can put all your force on them and twist it out.
