ok starting to rebuild this 4g63 is there anything special that i should know? its going to be a complete rebuild dtock bottom end semi modded head. i am only trying to do this once so anthing from bearings to timing anything is helpful.

im doing the same thing bud only mine will c mainly track time and the occasional wknd cruise.....ive read a lot on this site and apparently everyone is set on going oem in a lot of the rebuild....water pump, timing belt, frontcase...so that would be my suggestion.....just stick with the parts that have put thier time in and can handle the abuse these cars see.....also will u be building a 7 or 6 bolt...jus wondering....another thing unless you want to have your deck resurfaced and your head the same i would stick with a oem mls headgasket...their much more forgiving when it comes to improper sealing...jmo

Yep I'm about to start a rebuild too and I'm using stock internals but upgrading to the 2g piston. I would recommend new style lifters to eliminate lifter tick. If you're not going with MLS head gasket then get the felpro composite, they are very good. From what I have read NPR pistons are OEM so that's what I got. You can pick them up on eBay for like 80 bucks shipped. Get tri metal bearings, they are only a few bucks more than standard ones. Also spend the few extra bucks for ARP head bolts; you can reuse them if you should ever need to pull the head off again. You can get almost everything for www.partsdinosaur.com.

the one thing you guys need to know is that the 4g63 bottom it the best made engine ever they have proven that the stock bottoms can hold up to 1000 hp.

if you want to save money just think of that stay with oem part. you can shave and balance the crank and go you 2g piston on 1g rods. I dont know what your looking at hp wise but my first talon had a stock head and cams and it was push 350 + hp on e316g.

your trying to go cheap and nothing cheaper then staying stock

the first things we need to know is.. whats your golas. and what is your budget?

once we know that, we can point you in the right direction.

also is it a 6 bolt or a 7 bolt?

lots of zip lock bags, labels, take pictures, patience, and have a plan. You can save a lot of money if you have a plan and a goal in mind. There are plenty of smart DSM'rs here to always help and the supporting vendors that can hook you up with lots of good deals. Good luck!

TAKE YOUR TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1111one

Also bag/label every single bolt...make diagrams of exactly which hole which bolt came out of...like the front case specifically, I'm still kicking myself in the ass for not doing that.

Keeping track of which bolt came from which hole is excellent advice. You will have a very short oil pan bolt that goes in the front of the engine. If you put a longer oil pan bolt in that hole, it will eat your timing belt.

You'll also want to use LOTS of assembly lube. The advice I've gotten is that you shouldn't have any left in the tube when you're done reassembling the engine. I've also used copper spray on gaskets with good success. Mind you I've only rebuilt one engine and it was a Toyota 22RE not a 4G63.

ok i am going with a 7 bolt all stock internals any info on bearing clearences i am using brand new acl bearings and topline pistons. if that helps at all.

how much boost? whats the HP goal? stock oil pump? what oil to you plan on running?

can you tune? what is the total budget you have for the engine build and supporting mods?

Have you thought what machine work you will need?

read this.. written by DSM wiseman Big Woo Thanks again!!

will you have the block bored and honed? the engine balanced? What head gasket will be used?
will the head get rebuilt? do you plan on going to bigger cams ?

my hp goals are qbout 350 i have a complete topling gasket set. topline pistons and stock oil pump. no bore just keeping the standard bore i will hone it. there were no scratches or scrapes in the block so i want to keep the bottom end stock. i am going bigger cams and i have bc springs to go with it. i have bought everything i need for this. also i have acl alumi lug bearings. the question i have is why is plastigauge used and where do the thrust washers go. other than that i am ready to do this. i am going to hone it myself with a flexhone 240 grit

You use platigauge to check tolerances for bearings. Your repair manual should show you how to do it. It will let you know if you need thicker/thinner bearings or if you're ok with what you have. You really want to check every step along the way with your manual to make sure you're doing it right. Make sure you use a torque wrench on everything and do it to spec too.

the plastiguage is used to check your clearances between the rod and main bearings. Its place lenght wise accross the journals, than you install the bearings according to the manual. You tourque everything down, than take it back apart and check your plastiguage. It will smash it and the pak the guage came in will have the clearance numbers on it....heres a sight with the processes illustrted Tips and Tricks for Crankshaft and Rod-Bearing Installation - Tips & Tricks - Circle Track Magazine
