Starter/trans/clutch issue 1G

Ok this is my issue, I just "completed" an auto to manual swap on my 92 TSI AWD and was perhaps misinformed or misguided. The plate that goes between the trans and the block that has the hole for the starter is different between automatic and manual trans so i was told that i could just remove it and run without it. The issue i am having now is the starter seems to be working different than it should. The trans is having diffulties with certain gears (it changes) strange i know. On top of it all the clutch being pushed in does not allow the car to go into gear. I know kind of a strange way to state all of this but does anyone know if not having that starter plate there would cause these specific problems?

you need the plate therre for your set up.

1 The plate positions the starter where it needs to be.

2 The plate spaces the trans away from the motor by its thickness. So this would affect the clutch.

So yes it can.

Not sure if auto and manual plates are different though.

did you take out the eccentric ring for the flex plate before you put the flywheel on? its a little ring that is pressed into the crank so that the flex plate cant shift around. As far as the starter plate some people run them some don't. I didn't run one for a long time but i had alot of problems so i have one now just for the peace of mind. You should be able to get one i believe i have 3 so if you need one pm me.

Correct, you need that plate there...that little space does make a difference...it also has to be the plate that matches the manual trans so it positions the starter correctly...don't know if auto to manual plates differ, but I do know that FWD to AWD manual trans plates are different

Also, just a reminder, just making sure you also have both dowel pins also...lots of people think those aren't important and they are...again just a reminder

FWD turbo 5sp have a bigger plate than a awd5sp
fwd non turbo 5sp and awd 5sp are the same plate i know that for sure

Yea, also what I've seen a lot is the clutch disc springs falling out due to misalignment...but yea it always sucks learning the hard...we've all been there haha

Thank you for the immediate responses, I already have the new plate purchased from a dealership for my AWD manual i was just hoping i might be able to avoid draning my fluids and dropping the trans again. I also wanted to make sure that it could affect my trans shifting and my clutch from disengaging/engaging because if not i wanted to troubleshoot it all at once save me from pulling the trans for a 4th time.

P.S. i did remove the little ring from where the flex plate met the shaft but thanks for the heads up. If anyone has made this mistake with the starter plate or knows the exact affects i would appreciate the continued input i need to make sure i don't need to just scrap the trans and start fresh could the TOB have anything to do with this? I also have two different TOB's one is substantially heavier than the other does anyone know if aftermarket or OEM is heavier i would like to put the OEM one in but with no labeling i just took a stab at which was the OEM TOB.

Does anyone know if there is a difference between a turbo awd and a turbo non-awd starter plate? I am currently doing an auto to manual swap.
