I have a '97 Eclipse GS with the 420A engine, manual transmission, and no alarm or keyless entry. It will not turn over at all. Everything lights up, etc, it just doesn't spin the starter. It also doesn't dim the headlights when trying to start it. Also the starter tested OK. I have the clutch start switch unplugged (which according to this forum, should bypass it and no longer require the clutch to be pressed to start). Yes, I am sure it is the correct clutch switch. :thumb:

I am trying to locate the starter relay to test/replace it. There are posts on here that say it is in the engine compartment on the firewall above the clutch master cylinder, on the drivers kick panel by the fuse box, and under the stereo. My Haynes manual and the owners manual both leave out this little detail.

Mine is definitely a problem with the starting circuit. I can jump the S-wire on the starter directly to the battery and start my car and drive it. According to the wiring diagrams that should leave:

1. Ignition Switch (electrical portion)
2. Clutch Switch
3. Starter Relay
4. Possible wiring short between any of these points as well as from starter relay to starter.

I intend to do a continuity test on the Ignition switch per the Haynes manual. That should be easy enough.
The clutch switch is unplugged.
But I just can't find anything that shows/tells the location of the Starter Relay.

Thanks!

First off an easy test to do would be to check that the ignition switch has power to it, then see if it has power coming out of it. If that is ok, check continuity between the terminals on the relay. There should be continuity between terminals 1 and 2 and between 3 and 4. The starter relay is located behind the center of the dash as shown in the picture. To test the ignition switch, check continuity as shown in the 3rd picture provided. One of these should be faulty though. If not then we can go from there.

The relays under my radio don't match this. The one on the right (labeled Starter Relay in the above pic) has like 8 wires or so to it. The one on the left (labeled Door Lock Power Relay) has 4 prongs, with two horizontal side by side and two vertical just below them like in the pic I attached.
