First a little background info.
92 talon turbo awd 6bolt, check and verified vin. Quarter master twin disk/MA flywheel

When i purchased the car it had a starting issue where it was hard to start(e85 and clogged fuel filter). After starting it a couple of times during the winter i noticed the started grinding a little louder each time so i replaced the starter. It still made a noise but not as bad, so something else had to have been the issue.

After reading the forums I decided to check the dowel pins for the block/trans and sure enough the tranny was only held on by 3 bolts and no dowel. Went to sheps, got a new dowel and bolts and but by then the ring gear was already destroyed. The flywheel apparently does not use an oem ring gear as an oem one slid right over the spot it was supposed to go with no press fit. After doing some research I found out the fidanza had manufactured the flywheel years ago. I took the flywheel to them and had a new 106 tooth wheel put on.

After recieving the flywheel back and getting new clutch disks(the splines on the disks were chewed up from the trans) I put it all back together and it still grinds, although not as bad. The starter that is in the car no is from autozone it was in the car when the old (bad) ring gear was on but it only started the car twice, so I assume the teeth couldnt have gotten chew up that quick. But now after a few more starts on this ring gear the teeth are starting to look bad again. So I stopped starting the car to save my new ring gear.

Attached are some pics of the starter. This is the one autzone has given me three times by asking for a 92 turbo awd starter. All mounting bolts are tight and dowel pins are in. What else could possibly be wrong?????Any help appreciated. Thanks

Also the plate between the motor and trans appears to be flat, but does anyone know where about to get a new one? It doesnt appear the plate affect the position of the starter but I could be wrong.

Man, it looks like the starter bendix is pretty messed up. That's going to do nothing, but chew up your new ring gear.:( I would think about trying a new starter on there if you're confident that everything else is right, which it sounds like it is to me.
