starter fell apart...wth

I drove my 90 gsx back to my parents house. Got back in it about an hour after sitting. It wouldnt start/crank. So i get out to check the starter, i reach under the intake and i feel the solenoid, and it moves....wth, then it just fell off the top of the starter.....ive never seen that happen before. I didnt pull it out, ill leave it sit until i get a new one. Is this a "common" problem.

I've never heard of a DSM starter just falling apart like that. Mine clicks when I start it, but it still works (for now ) But at least you know what the problem was, and its a pretty easy fix.

That's a first I've seen as far as a solenoid falling off. Usually the contacts inside burn up thus the clicking and no engagement you experience sometimes. Sometimes the windings burn in two and nothing happens. Sometimes the starter drive wears out and that's the click/zing noise you will sometimes hear. Like Dreamon said, at least you found it easy enough.

Every once and a while my starter had problems this year. I finally got around to pulling my engine and was going to replace it over the winter. However, upon inspection, I found that the 2 long bolts that hold the electric motor to its base, had loosened and backed themselves out, causing me to have my starting problems.

Better than having the entire starter fall off, which is what happened to me (even after using loctite red). Then, when it fell off, the hot cable grounded it self, which burned up my wiring harness and nearly set the car on fire.
