Starion intercooler [Merged 9-7] FMIC front mount conquest

Why would anyone spend the money on going full T4 and then go cheap on the IC? Doesn't make any sense.

Let me give you guys a little tip, get the biggest possible intercooler and best possible fuel system you could possibly imagine. Then pick a turbo that will work with it. Don't go wanting a huge turbo and then coming on here asking dopey questions like if it will work with a crappy IC or stock injectors. Why even bother? No, I'm directing this towards specific individuals. I just see too much of this comprimising attitude. If you need a huge turbo, just because, you can't comprimise on other stuff. Can't, can't, can't.

My FMIC is 22x14x3.5 and it's a good Spearco core, not some crappy OEM IC off a Starion, Supra, Saab, Volvo or anything like that. It'll work just fine for a 20G, T3 or anything I can imagine. I took the IC out of the picture, I never have to worry if it's big enough because it's bigger than anyone will ever need.

I dont' know much, but I would think if you wanted to stick with the stock turbo and get better gains, then get the starion. It is smaller than most but it is bigger than stock and it is front mount. It has its advantages for a first timer.

I was going to get a starion intercooler but then I realized it is small. For my first step, I am getting a Isuzu NPR Turbo Diesel intercooler. It measures 20x8.5x2. It is big, not the biggest but for what I want to do and my budget it is perfect. When I go with a larger turbo, say a T3/T4 or a straight up T4, that intercooler is going to be pulled and a larger core is going to be fitted.

In conclusion...T4 no friggin way. Stock Turbo or something a little larger, should be fine, to pushing max efficiency....

But what do I know, I have only done the research......

I personally dont like them mostly because they are very old(cars were made in the late 80's right?,(just my opinion though) that is why I am going with the MKIV intercooler. I cant afford around 1K for a front mount. I would say if you are gonna spend the cash for a Starion front mount just look around and find a MKIV sidemount and be a "sleeper". Later Corey

i just want something in the 300 dollar range or under ... if someone has the Starion IC tell me your input on it

its a decent intercooler

i have it with the tiny ass 1.75" in and outlets, and it cools wayyy better than the stock smic

i'd imagine that the supra smic is better, but a starquest fmic with 2.25" in and outlets would definately contend.

one thing, though, putting in a starion is about the biggest pain in your ass you will ever do.

300 dollar range, you could buy two MKIV sidemounts for that.. Seriously if you don't wanna spend alot of cash and are tired of heat soaking the factory POS, buy the Supra sidemount. In fact mine should be on this weekend I will let you know how hard it is and how much of a difference there is in power. Later Corey

I know upgrading to a Mitsubishi Starion FMIC is a relatively popular budget minded upgrade... but are they any good, honestly? How well do they flow in comparison to say a Spearco? Any feedback from people who have used them or have knowledge of them would be appreciated, thanks...

This has been discussed a lot in the past. I believe the overall consensus is that you should just save for a bigger, more efficient design FMIC. Especially if you're going to go through the trouble of installing it. You can build up a custom Spearco for a decent price. Of course, I haven't tested them myself, so I'm just passing on info from the many discussions I've read.

Here's a list of all the kits available:
