Starion intercooler [Merged 9-7] FMIC front mount conquest

Here is a picture of my Starion FMIC setup with the bumper off the car. I had 2 1/4" pipes, that I got from RRE, tig welded on. With a big16G I was able to get 12.7 at 109mph out of it. Now I'm not saying it was easy to go that fast and the core does have its limits. I had to use water injection and I hosed down the core after each pass at the strip. For most days on the street it was fine for about 18psi but on the really, really hot days it would heat soak. I think with a real IC, like the IRC race core I have now, I could have done 112-114mph traps without the heat-soaking issues. Even though I liked my Starion FMIC when you really crunch the numbers you'll find that going with a real (read IRC) FMIC will always make better sense.

Well this weeks turbo said a few things that I have been trying to get answered now for a while. I have wanted to know how important it is to get a intercooler that is 3.5 in think. Because all the good intercoolers out there seem to be that think.

But what the said is that surface area is better then thinkness. which makes sense. I want to buy a intercooler that is tube and fin. It is only 3 inches think. But its 24x12x3(core) so it has a big surface area, but is not that think. Also they said with tube and fin core a 3.5 inch think core is only 2.87 inches. So i guess a 3 inch core is 2.37 inches think. Is this going to be good enough?

Sorry to hi-jack the thread. But i can answer you question very easily.
Indy GOOD starion BAD:thumb:

Indy race core it is they have a kit on extreme psi for the street front mount kit is this every thing i will need or do i have to also buy the u bend for the 16g turbo and the turbo outlet elbow? and is anyone else runnig this kit?

Street core (spearco 2-120 24x7.9x3.5)

2.5" powdercoated mandrel piping (Gunmetal Grey)

2.5" tubular TB elbow powdercoated (Gunmetal Grey)

All silicone couplers all Tbolt clamps

Coolant over flow it includes

There's no question about it, you want the IRC...People have gone at least 112 with the stocker..I doutb the starion has even done that....

$200 no. $50 or so yes. starion ic's used to be an upgrade people did when they were cheap.

You actually have less air flow going through the starion fmic! A Supra Side mount is a LOT better then our oem one.

i've heard 300 cfm or so for the starion...come on mike, get a supra SMIC!

i was wondering how good this intercooler really is. I know that its going to be better than stock but should i waste my money on it or wait and get something better

Don't waste your money....its no better than the stock sidemount.

Hum, interesting to know. Anyone have any hard data? I was really thinking about this but I suppose you get what you pay for.

Does anyone have pics of how to install a Starion FMIC on a '91 TSi, like taking the bumper off and where to run the pipes?

basically, its a bi***.

go to a rubber supply company. i used pacific rubber. get some stuff from them called 'bellowsflex'. its a rubber hose that withstands 120psi. i can stand on it without it caving in. its just rubber hose with two coils of metal running along it. it can turn its sharpest with about a 9 inch radius. you might even be able to get away with the non bellowsflex regular rubber hose; the non bellowsflex clamps down easier. infact, rre uses it for couplings.

other than that, get some new ins and outs welded on, and rig that puppy up with some brackets. you can make some brackets right?
