okay, i plan on doing a stand alone insall for the WiKi. there are 4 choices for the article i will write though, as to do all 4 would be forever and probably redundantly confusing if some one was trying to decide which one ot go by.

I only want to hear from people that either have a stand alone and it may be wired or not. Or people that are SERIOUSLY going to go stand alone SOON.

the write ups will be rather generic since evry ECU calls it's in and outputs something slightly different. it will mainly be focused around a haltech install, which would be similar to a LINK and the Autronic ECU's.

So here's what i want to know

1.) stand alone wired directly to the motor with it's own harness in a 1g

2.) same thing in a 2g (icludng 6 bolt swap and stock 7 bolt sensor setups)

3.) ECU wired through the a stock 1g harness which helps retain a stock look, keep all guages working and not interfere with airbag, speed/cruis control or any other factory functions (except the tach which i will cover a few ways to make it work in all of the articles)

4.) Same as 3 except on a 2G same advantages.

people that are SERIOUS, please let me know what you plan to do andwhat sytem you're looking at.. IF your going AEM plug-n-play, no need to reply, that ones simple enough for anyone to install, but too many damn complicated setup variables to try and go indepth on in a single 'net article.

Also, some systems i can help with some things that are ECU specific, mostly in LINK, Haltech, most AEM stuff,Accel DFi (hardley ever seen in a DSM), Autronic SM-2, SDSEFI (not one of my favorites) Motec (rich mans system) i will answer or do follow ups on teh wiki if you PM me about them when using teh write up

Also, if you have any requests on wiring additinal outputs (NOS,flatshift, dual runner manifolds) please make them known in this post so i can plan them in this write up ( this is going to be a long write up BTW, so don't expect it next week)

Well, if there's really no one iterested in stand alone installs. Can we get some opinions on what most people would like to see as far as instal and setup on ANY engine management setups? If i know them i'll do the right up specifically on a mitsubishi. But i would prefer stand alones. Except for a few AFC's, i dont touch the band aid tuning stuff.

A stand alone is way over kill for 95% of the cars on here. I personally think that its not needed untill your running 9.0s. DSM link is so easy to dial your car in with anyone can do it with the help of the link board. There is so much BS with diffrent sensors etc you really have to rewire the whole engine harness with a stand alone like AEM. On top of all that you have to be a rocket scientist to know how to set up and tune the car.

EDIT: One reason i want to do it, is for those guys who's next step is a stand alone and either can't afford and install + ECU, Or ouwld rather save about 600 bucks on the unit alone.

Let's Compare

The EM EMS pnp model is anywhere from 1600 to a little over 2k

A NEW model hatech E6X capable of sequintial injection and COP + all the standard race features = ~1300 with all sensors and wires loom and fusebox..which can all be eliminated and ran through the factory harness from inside the car leaving all the guages and cruise etc working..haltech also has on the fly adjustability through knobs you cna make for cheaper than buying that will controll fuel across the board from 12-50% depending on the setting, ignition +/- 8*, boost control and a slew of other comonents.

Link (not DSm link) Can be bought at MSRP for 990 with a built in 5 bar MAp sensor and most of the same outputs as teh hatech and AEM. Great product IMo

Atronic Sm2 ~ 1800 bucks, but so capable its rediculous. but for most our needs ( for those of us who want the capabilities) the haltech is teh best answer for most features and lowest price.

I can run a haltech or link or autronic right through the stock harness at the ECU almost plug-n-play (although you cut the MDP sensor and use it for a GM map and you cut the knock wired to run an IAT sensor) , it's really simple after doing it for so many years that i figured i could give a DSM specifid "direct install guide". And, I can provide all the trigger and CAS (1g and 2 g) info along with how to set it up with the stock ignitor, and keeping a very sleeper looking car with a fall stand alone in it. Running a stand alone on my 16G I gained so much more torque an top end power with the halech, not to mention milage increase. That now that if i were to buy a vehicle, The first three things i'd buy ( altogether) is a turbo kit if there is one ( or supercharger) preferably with intercooler, a fuel system and a stand alone.

You really don't realize how tied down you are trying to keep a stock or modified stock ECU happy and make good power maybe exceot for dsmlink but even it has weird settings and tables compared to most real sand alones. Even at 400 HP levels you can obtain it so much easier with a proper tune, antilag, flat shifting, NOS control, built in turbo timers, 2 step rev limiter and more and more.. Just so many reasos that if you are going to get very serious in your car, You're gonna end up stand alone anyway most likely.

I'm just offering it out there. That's what i do besides metal fab and painting houses.. I'm hoping to buy my Onw dyno ( maybe even AWD) come this spring , i have the credit for it since i already run 2 decently successfull businesses already. I just don't know if it;ll pay for it's self and the bay i'll have to rent to use it. There's no other AWD dynos with almost 3 hours of here, so i think i could rake in a little cash twith those statistics.. There are 2 other regular dynos in town though, One is not popular at all, and one just got sold so everyone is leary of the new owner's tuning ability. Since he's just a rich ass in the corvette club that decided to buy the guys shop just for dynoing his club members and friends cars *shakes head in disbelief*

I"m sure i could do a megasquirt, but untill i build one or get one to play with i'll know them inand out. The only ones i've messed with were either to be repalced or just trying to get them running "safely" never from scratch install. ANd you don't have to be a drocket scientist to hook and set them up to run our motors, it's wasy and that's what i'm planning to explain

I would go ahead and do a write up on how to install & tune of the haltech for the DSM's. One of the reasons you don't see many haltechs is the lack of reviews and information of the unit. The more information, the better in my opinion. We can then let the user decide what feature, price, support they want.

How about a comparison of all the stand alone ECU's, it's features, and price for the whole package.

I like the idea, but in the end, most people are just going to buy Dsmlink. Especially with all of the new feature's V3 is going to have.

I would love to see more people using Autronic ecu's but it's cost prohibitive for the average enthusiast. I think the Haltech writeup is probably the best option at this point.

i think i'm going with your first statement. The sencond half however would be a little tougher, but i've already got some pro & cons of each system that maybe i could write out. But i don't feel i could do a full blown comparison unless i installed each one on teh same car and dyno tested and datalogged the entire time. I would have to set them all at the same AFR's and timing as well. It's not that hard, but i don't have one of each laying around.

EDIT: I was hoping for a Haltech install since thats what i have ( bought E6k when i was a dealer for them.) Now it's a bit ''out dated" it was just replaced by the E6X

I'm sure if we do a feature comparison with some simple pros and cons along with a price comparison, it'd be helpful. It doesn't necessarily all have to be reviewed by one person, there's a few of us running megasquirt that can give objective opinions. I've also tuned dsmlink, and can provide objective comparison with that.

ooops. wrong post.. and yea, maybe we should do a whole seperate write up on megasquirt since it is quite different than most PEFI systems.
