okay so i just bought a 1999 eclipse gs and noticed a squeaking noise..first thing i changed out was alternator belt and then serpentine belt..still squeaking next thing just for the heck of it put in a new power steering pump still squeaking..and yes all the belts are really tight..possibly harmonic balance that seems to be where the squeak is coming from and the squeak gets louder when accelerating..and i know for a fact it isnt the alternator or that belt..any ideas ?

Drop some ajax on the belts with the car off. Double check belts tightness. When you turn the is there a huge load (electrical). Its usually the alternator slipping.

my car did the same thing. it turned out to be the harmonic balancer. on my car it is 2 seperate pieces pressure fitted together, the pieces had slipped and one was turning faster than the other:notgood:. i replaced the balancer and my belts and havent had the problem since:thumb:.

is this the same for the 420a and the 4g63.### i have a 420a and will need a puller correct? rather than unbolting the four bolts like u would n a 4g63. and if I replace this and there is still squeaking what else is there to replace? and it has nothing to do with the alternator or belt its somewhere near the crankshaft pulley

im not sure if you need a puller on the 420a, never looked. when you replace it though, change all your belts and clean all your pulleys to make sure there is no leftover residue. sometimes that residue will cause your belts to slip and squeak even though there is nothing actually wrong

ya ill do the harmonic balancer then..i just replaced both belts and psteering pump yesterday and cleaned all the pulleys so i know it isnt the belts its gotta be that balancer

make sure you get an oem balancer and not an underdrive pulley. the oem one is weighted so it helps prevent crankwalk.

yes, just get the one at the auto parts store. sorry if i confused you.
underdrive pulley=bad
auto parts store pulley= good
hope that clears it up. let me know of any other ?'s

oh okay i gotchu ya i picked up a new balancer and the puller about an hour and half ago gonna do it tomorrow around 11:00am hope this is what has been squeaking so bad..how long do you think it will take and do you use the puller to put the new balancer back on?

i have a 4g63 and it took me about 45 min in my driveway LOL. biggest issue is taking off the belts and putting them back on, the pulley is easy. good luck

ok im gonna try an make this as short as possible..orignally i replaced the alternator belt becuz i thought it was squeaking when i went to pick one up it was six inches to big from autozone so i had them get me the exact same one on the car..now when i got the pulley off today it was like 2x as small as the real one i got and made of a cheap aluminum compared to the heavy new iron one i bought..so i now realized that the orignal belt that i bought was the right one but someone has a cheap as aluminum harmonic balancer on here and put a small alternator belt on here..is this what you called a under drive pulley..its really light weight and feels cheap compared to the 2x bigger harmonic that i bought?

ohh and whats the easiest way to press on this new balancer on a 420a

By the way thanks for your help

ohh and could this underdrive pulley be the culprit in my annoying squeal?

yes, that is an underdrive pulley and yes that could be the culprit of your squeaking. not sure how to do the instal on a 420A:hmm:, i would check the service manual they have it in there.

On my neon (420a) I had to heat the pully to get it on. If you can get a press and rig it, you should be able to do it cold but, not sure how you go about that though. They are not that easy to do but, they fit well and just make sure you get it flush.

Well I was able to replace it and that is what was causing the squeaking annoyance:). It was quit easy no heating neccesary. Just removed passenger engine mounts and lowered the motor. Then banged on the new harmonic balancer with a big rubber mallet till I felt the center bolt had enough thread to pull the rest in and it did so without any problem. Now I did feel a little less power from the car after this. Is this due to the engine having to rotate more around the harmonic balancer rather then the udp that was on there?:hmm:

congrats on the successful fix :hellyeah:. you are correct, the loss of power is due to the crank having to turn a heavier pulley. you can make up for that power pretty easily though.

Actually it came back today so I have no idea why its still doing it. It gives a low squeak at idle and then gets louder as I accelerate. I have no idea what else to fix. Last option is to take it to Mitsubishi and say FIX THIS. Any ideas?

check your belts they might have loosened by stretching if they were new,or they could be too tight. hope this helps :thumb:

p.s. dont take it to the stealership:nono:

You will have to adjust the belt tension a few times to get it right. If it gets really bad when you turn the AC on, your compressor may be going out causing excessive drag on the belt even if it seems tight. Tighten it down fairly well but, be careful, if you tighten it down too much, could mess up the bearings or bend the shaft.

I changed my CP and it started squeaking before I even made it home from the shop. Had to do it again. Check your bolts to make sure they are not coming loose and cause the belts to loosen as well.

So I took it to a dealer :coy:which on the way the alternator belt snapped. But they charged me 124$ to do a full inspection of the car, have keys made, and for new belts and installation becuase I mean I just bought it two weeks ago knowing nothing about it. They said it was the belts so before i signed I walked out there and started it up damn thing started squeaking like a pissed of mouse who just got his cheese stolen. I walked back in there and said listen I've already done all this crap that your techs are doing a thousand times, replaced half the car, and paying over hundred dollars for you guys to do shit that takes 10min for me to do.So Im gonna expect this sound to be gone before I sign this. So theyll have it till tomorrow . Oh and to answer someones question. The AC doesnt squeak when i turn it on. The PS was just replaced and the harmonic balancer. Now six new belts have been swapped out of the car within the past two weeks. My last guess is a pulley.
