vancouver,
This happened recently, whenever i drive, say in the neighborhood, whenever it shifts gear, i can hear this screeching noise from outside. Sounds like it's from my wheel area/chassis. Could it be my shocks? Or my brake disc rubbing against my rotor or something? It sounds like rusted metal rubbing each other.

I can't diagnose the problem percisely due to me having to be in the car to hear the noise.

take the wheels off and inspect your brake pads/rotor and start from there....
.. good luck.

it only happens when i don't press the brakes. when i engage the brakes, the sound goes away. now it's happening constantly when i drive.

Also when i reverse my car, the sound goes louder, like waaaaay louder.

does this mean i need new brakes? or just get them checked out and take the indicator out?

Time for new brakes. TRUST ME on this one. Mine did the same thing and when I pushed in the brake pedal the sound went away. Your brakes are worn down to the wear indicators and that is what's making that noise. Change your brakes now or you will be changing your brakes and rotors later.

i went to the mechanic today and they said i still have more than 50% of my brake pads. they said the summer heat is causing the noise plus the aftermarket brake pads. i dont know how they can tell if it's aftermarket or not.

Edit - i just went out and took my front passenger tires off and i spin the rotor by hand (not a 360 spin, just a little bit) and i can hear screeching noise (metal against metal). I listened closely and i suspect that it's my brakes rubbing against my rotor. when i felt my rotor with my hand i can feel a dent all around compared to my other rotor, it's perfectly fine.

Now how do i tell if i have seized calipers? I can't slip anything in between my brakes and my rotor (cardboard, paper, etc.) is this perfectly normal? shouldn't there be a gap in between the brake pad and the rotor?

I sort of have the same problem. the sound almost sounds similar to that of a key being cut. definitely like metal on metal. except, mine is when i press the breaks, most of the time. it started out a while ago being all the time, mostly when i made a left turn, or changed lanes to the left, etc. and eventually, now it is mostly when I only press my breaks, occasionally when I make a left turn. I dont think my break pads are too worn ( ebc greenstuff) and ill look again on my rotors ( powerslot) for any abnormal wear. I just hope its not anything else, as I just replaced my crank pulley with an all aluminum one ( no dampener), and the sound is coming from that area. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I had this problem a couple days ago. It turned out to be the dust shield scraping against my rotor, and it put a nice gouge in my new rotor.
