On christmas day I spun my rod bearings. I am going to start rebuilding my motor. I was told to get a new crank. While I'm there I'm going to eliminate the balance shaft. Is there anything else anyone would recommend while I have it all apart?

You need to have your crank inspected. Even if you pull another crank from some other used and probably tired engine then you have to have that one inspected. Buy a complete rebuild kit from a reputable vendor. I would avoid the cheap eBay kits. Be sure to use a reputable machinist, with machine work you get what you pay for, if the price seems too good to be true then it is.

Thank you, I'm going to look into a rebuild kit now. Also I'm going to bring my buddy with dsm knowledge along with me to inspect any crank before i buy it. :thumb::hellyeah:

What is wrong with your crank? Did you inspect it for damage or wear? The machinist will have the final word on whether a crank is acceptable or not so sure take a friend but don't let that be the final opinion.

So far, I dont know of anything wrong with my crank. I guess when I start pulling it apart, take it to a machinist to inspect it.

Absolutely! Use what you have, no need to spend money where it is not needed. When buying a rebuild kit you do need to purchase one with new pistons or you run the risk of having them fail later on. Just a thought.

I was looking at rebuild kits. I notice most come with pistons. The only one I have found so far is Top Line. Do you recommend any other kits? Or any other kits with aftermarket pistons?

I have used the TopLine rebuild kit before. I purchased it from MachV and it included the front cover. That is the kit I would suggest and I would suggest purchasing the .020 over and having the cylinders bored to assure they are in round.

I will definitely plan on getting that kit then. I have never had anything taken to the machine shop before. How much am i looking at to have the cylinders bored?

Can be anywhere from $25 on up per cylinder. I would try to take it to a machinist that often deals with 4 cylinder engines because part of the labor time is setting up the machines to accomadate whatever engine is being machined. Boring will not be the only service they will charge for though, you should have the head surface decked to assure straightness and they will hone the cylinders after boring. Also, when the bearing spun it may have damaged the rod, the damage may be able to be repaired or you may have to acquire a new rod. Best way to work through this is to take your time, don't rush and think it through. One thing that is free is sitting down and consulting with your machinist about what happened to the engine and what you are wanting to do with the engine. They don't just operate complex devices that cut metal, they are very knowledgeable about what should and should not be done during a rebuild. I would take advantage of this and have an open line of communication with your chosen machinist.

Thank you for that! I feel more informed now. :thumb:
