California, USA,
Just finished the "Free Mods" recommended on this site (... thanks!) ... except for cutting out around the vents in the splash shield leading to the intercooler. I'm just a little worried about rocks, etc. damaging the intercooler. Will regular window screen really provide adequate protection ... or is there a better approach?

HOLY!!!! I broke off that small part of the skirts after an accident, and never replaced it. Also, my splash shield was ghetto-fied by my previous owner! Hmm, time to replace both of em! Can't pass $32.24 for both of em, then I can actually buy the skirt part too!

That's what I'm talking about.

when i had mine of to put my lambo door kit on i took and cleaned them up real good and sprayed them gloss black look really good and easy as hell to get dirt of them!!

Wow, That is cheap. I usually just do rubberized undercoating and then Krylons Plastic Semi Gloss Paint. Works good but for that price why not!?

does it come with the rivets/screws/bolts etcs that are necessary for the install.. both sides on mine are gone.. from previous owner.. this would be something nice to waste money on since ive been contemplating what else i dont really need to do, but want to because i love my car so much :)

All hardware.

Go ahead. Give your car something nice for the holidays. She deserves it.

Hey,

Just bought a 95 talon tsi awd about a week ago and been doing some maintaince to it here and there. I noticed it has no "splash shield" or "inner fender" behind the intercooler, so its just open there right in front of the wheel. Seems that it may help it get more air but also seems it might make it easier for something to hit or or knock it around. The drivers side has one, so guess maybe this one fell off or something for the previous owner? Does anyone run without one? I looked around on ebay and other places but cant seem to find a replacement, all i can seem to find is the non turbo version, not the one i need.

Thanks for any help

Plenty of people run without them (myself included). Most of us just litterally rip off the shield, and replace it with chicken wire or some other kind of metal/plastic fencing stuff that works just fine.

As for replacing it... Perhaps you could try posting something up in the "Want" section. Not many people actually want to spend money on something silly as this, though. As for getting one from Satan... I think it's too specific of a part to get it through the "Parts Department" at your local dealership.

I would concur on the junkyard idea. I would sell you mine, but it's got a big hole in it.

It sounds like you really only want the turbo version of the splash shield, but if you can't find anything then simply cut some slits into an N/A shield. No one will be able to tell the difference except you.

All the N/T versions come in one piece. On mine it looks like the part of the shield behind the intercooler is its own separate piece? So would the N/T one even have a chance of fitting? I thought i remember looking at the drivers side and it was its own piece also, im at work right now so i will have to look later to confirm. I suppose its not that big of a deal and i could just rig something up if its too hard something, or just leave it along. I just wanted to check out others expierences first.

Good observation. I'm not sure if the NA versions are one piece, but it wouldn't surprise me if they were. Yes, the turboed DSM versions definately separate into their own section (as far as the 2Gs are concerned). Look at this link. You can see that this section is clearly its own piece. Again, your best bet is to either leave it alone or to just go down to Home Depot and pick something up for cheap. Unless a sizeable rock hits your SMIC (you would in all likelihood have to be driving in off-road conditions) then you shouldn't worry about small pebbles. The only thing I would possibly be concerned about is sand/salt during the winter season. I'm not sure how well the OEM SMIC holds up to corrosion.

I have cut out that portion of the wheelwell cover/splash shield directly behind my SMIC. I have been running it this way for the last 10K miles with no mesh or other type of protective covering. It's not recommended but I can tell you that I frequently inspect the IC both visually and by pressure testing it. I have found no damage to it. Not even a bent fin (at least not on the back/tire side of it). Hopefully I didn't just jinx myself!:p

can someone explain the point of this splashguard?

if it is replaced with chicken-wire, what exactly is it "blocking"

Not too much.

Some people think that you would want to get rid of all that hot air that has just gone through the SMIC, so this is their solution.

Its blocking dirt and debris,I had mine off(until fmic)the only time it got dirty was when it snowed or rained then it got real dirty!I have my ssqv there now and its pretty trashed!as long as you clean it out i think youll be ok:thumb:

My friends Laser didnt have one on....We took off the SMIC just to find it very badly corroded.

The talon he just got doesnt have one either, and its not pretty....

Id leave it on, keeps shit outa there. Just do the cheap mod thingy and open up the vents. Best of both worlds.
