i recently bought a 92 eclipse n/t 1.8 and the first week or so was fine but suddenly the speedometer drops to 0 and the odometer stops in its tracks...what could cause this? i popped the cluster out once and thought the wire harness was just loose so i played with it and popped it back in but still nothing....i also thing my temp gauge doesnt work either its stuck on C all the time.....someone please help i dont want to spend hundreds on a new cluster

ps....the tach, oil temp and gas gauge as well as the lights all work so it cannot be the wire harness

did you check your fuses?..not sure if that effects every gauge but I know the other day my RPM gauge, radio and cigarette lighter plug used for my radar detctor stopped working. I checked all the fuses and none were blown but all the sudden everything started working again. I must have pulled the fuse out and when putting it back in , it made a connection again. Just an idea ....

i never really thought about that but ill try anything...ill go do that right now...anyone else with any bright ideas please post! thanks

If you could get ahold of an ohmmeter, maybe you could use it to see if there are any of the connectors that don't have power. I would ask someone else about it, too, because I might not even know what I'm talking about, but it seems logical. But if you do decide to get a new cluster, you could get a used one on ebay for about $40.

Broken speedo cable. Yours is mechanical, not electric. The cable may not be seated in the gauge.

Used on eBay seldom pull $25.

The odometer will be along with the speedo, for the temp gauge check the connections at the sensor and the wires to it. Pull the plug off and ground it, the temp gauge should peg to the top. If not, it's wiring. IF it does, it may be the sender.

Have you washed your engine bay lately??/ because alot of people wash out their engine bay with water and then things start to go funny because the water interferes with the plugs.

ive had the same problem, im not sure how my 2g compares to your 1g but, if you jack the car up, and crawl under the front axle, and look up, you can see a plug that points down, reach up and pull it back down into place, you should hear/feel a little click, its kinda hard to see, but its there, bring a flashlight. just remember it involves reaching up into the engine bay kinda, but its nearly impossible to see if your standing outside looking at the engine with the hood up.
This might be ur problem or maybe im just useless :p
anywho better to check this before you spend more money on a new cluster or something

*EDIT* i have no idea whats up with ur temp gauge tho, never had that problem

ok so im pretty sure i figured out what the problems were...

1) my speedometer cable was unhooked from the tranny, so i hook it up and still doesnt work, so i pull both ends of the cable and the cable pulls out on both ends (aka its snapped) so i need a new speedometer cable. im not sure if the gear that sets into the tranny is stripped also, i know i need a cable so ima get that first and then if it still doesnt work then get to the gear

2) i need a coolant temperature sending unit (NOT the temperature sensor). on the 1.8 mdls there is the sensor with 2 wires coming out and the sending unit with 1 wire...the terminal on the sending unit snapped off and stuck in the plug so i need a new sending unit...however i called my local mitsubishi dealer and they tried to tell me my car didnt have a sending unit so i have to go to the junkyard and hope i can find a 1.8 n jack one
