"Spec" clutches?

the stage 4 pedal pressure is a bit different from the Stage3. 4 & 5 feel pretty much the same to me but i have only used a Stage 5 once on a Supra but the pedal pressure felt about the same as a 2600. IS it streetable???? That's up to each person. I didn't like it much for street but each person has their tastes.

i bought mine from horsepowerfreaks.com, stage 3 for i think 350. not sure. havent installed it yet but word is on 2gnt.com and from some guys i know are very very satisfied and happy with their spec stage 1, 2 and 3 clutch, havent met anyone who needs a stage 4 yet.

I just picked up the new Spec puck/disk hybrid rated at 510 ft/lbs. I have just one word for it: awesome. A friend of mine spent a while on the phone with Spec discussing crankwalk and how they plan to offer a product to help aleviate it. This new clutch is apparently it. 2200 lb pressure plate, sprung clutch design, and get this: stock pedal pressure when used with a stainless line. I'm still in the break in process on both the motor and the clutch, but so far I think it's absolutely awesome. Does not chatter at all, is very streetable. I don't know how it does at the track yet, but I will soon. It was a little pricey, coming in at $500.00 including shipping, but this was four months ago when it was still in a prototype phase. It may be cheaper now. I had both the OEM and the SPEC throwout bearing, and opted to install the SPEC. I'll post anything else if it happens.

P.S. I also had an ACT 2600 before I got the spec. Didn't even install it, just returned it after hearing all the horror stories of the springs coming out of the ACTs and seeing a few first hand.

Matt.

Ordered a spec stage 3 on Monday from Titan motorsports but they said it woulf take a weekor two to get since spec makes them only when ordered or something, but I might have to wiat installing it I just blew something in my motor since I have oil everywhere and my engine cut out. Still sitting next to the road waiting to get picked up but I am in class, will go out there after and go check out the damage(hoping its the oil supply line)

DsmRz,
hey i jus got a spec stage 2 clutch installed yesterday, im still in the process of breakin it in... i had it instaled but had to bleed it myself. I dunno if its my engine mount or wht but my car rattles like a snake from hell. I let you guys know how it holds up...so far so good.
question...does your ride usually shake if you get a new clutch?....I mean this baby shakes mang! Advice....

Was the flywheel resurfaced/resurfaced correctly? Do you mean it chatters when the clutch engages or does it shake constantly? You may want to start a new thread about this...

For those who already have a spec stage 2 or 3, please stay current with the updates. I am seriously thinking about buying a stage 3. I may go with a stage 2 but I dont think it will last long with my setup, that is, if I ever finish the damn thing!

I have had my stage 2 for over a year now, but anyways the shaking you are talking about can you more specific. Mine shakes too during acceleration, in 1,2,3,and a little bit in 4th gear. I have replaced both axles, the shaking is coming from the driver side. Let me know if you figure it out.

The N/T Eclipse set up have a modular clutch... the flywheel is attached to all the other components... so when i buy a new clutch the flywheel is changed as well. The ride shakes period! I dunno if its cause the clutch is new and i have to break it in or what..but it shakes mang. I was talkin to one of my buddies and he said it could be that the clutch jus needs to set in (break-in) knowing that everything is new including the flywheel the tolerances might be really tight..we'll see what happens after a few miles instructions sa 470 milies min for break-in. so yea i'll let you know other than that i'like the way it grabs

ok, but where is the shaking coming from in your car? and I have had my clutch in over a year and it still shakes.

Hey guys, haven't posted here in a while. don't have internet at the new crib yet :( .
I have the SPEC stage 2 with the RRE lightened stock flywheel. I had them installed nov 04, so i can't comment on install. The clutch is pretty light but still heavier then stock, The only time i have slipping issues is when i do several runs back to back and the slipping only comes in if i drive normally, letting the clutch out somewhat slowly, if i just let the clutch out hard it has never slipped on me. I still haven't dragged at the track yet so i don't have any times but im running the bigt28 killer at 17psi approx 260hp to the wheels. I've been through a year of autocross and am starting on my second with the clutch. I can always slip out the clutch with no problems.

I'm very happy with my purchase (directly from spec's website) and will probably upgrade to the hybrid stage 3 disc when i need to.

Its the engine bay mang...tha damn clutch makes the whole thing shake...thats waht i could see from my diagnosis...all my suspension componenets are new..so i dont see why that could be a problem.

I like the way she grabs (spec stage 2) :thumb: i recomend this clutch....still observing it though so more to come! :dsm:

I have a Spec Stage 3 6 puck, and I haven't romped on it yet, but it is a very very streetable clutch. I have no complaints at all about the streetability of it, and the pedal pressure is plenty light.

Please update SPEC users. Hows the chatter? Any problems?

I plan on buying a stage 2 and would like more feedback. What flywheel are you using? I plan on going with the fidanza or ACT.

THANKS its really appreciated!

I don't think my clutch chatters any, but I have too many little "issues" making racket to be sure anyways. I have the stock 6 bolt flywheel. I love my Stage 3, and I would have no problem recommending it to anyone who thought that they might exceed the limits of a stage two, but might be worried about driveability. :thumb:

i have a spec stage 1 in my wife's car

stock pedal feel
clamps enuff to a 18psi b16g

she loves it

Thanks for the replies so far!

Could anyone else with a stage 2 comment please? I like to have a wide range of opinions :) .

I'll be purchasing my SPEC clutch with either a fidanza or ACT flywheel within the month.

we have never had one report of chatter from a Spec clutch. I'm glad to see so many people going with the Spec. So many of our customers follow up with us and they are so happy they went with our advice. Try them folks. they rock!

I've been pretty silent about my Spec Stage 3 6puck.

I now have roughly 700 miles on it and the clutch is great. It is streetable, but would be a PITA in traffic. Pedal pressure is almost exactly stock (i couldnt really tell the difference to be honest, to the point where i questioned whether or not the clutch was in, but i know it was in cause we did it ourselves duh). The clutch made its presence known though, when it bit harder than a trained german shepherd on a criminal.

I do get some chattering, but it is sporratic. If i slip the clutch wrong during engagement in 1st the whole frickin engine bay is a self contained earthquake. Still, it is sporratic and the more i drive the more i am able to make it not happen.

Cliffs notes: stock feel, clutch holds like holy hell, chatters if u slip it wrong.

prostreet i hope ur right, i ordered a stage three from u guys a few weeks ago, still hasnt arrived yet, didnt ship till late last week, i guess alot of orders coming thru.

EDIT:::: Clutch came in today, im very impressed with it, i cant wait tilll i get it in the car and see what shes realy made of!!

Well, I thought I better update my experience with my Stage 2 clutch. I have roughly 7,000 miles on it and have been very impressed. My car sees quite a bit of track time in the summer and I have around 10 to 12 passes on my Spec so far. I have pretty much consistant 1.8 to 1.9 sixty foot times. I usually slip it quickly and firmly at 4500 to 5000 rpm for the best results with it.

My car is not near as powerfull as many DSM's on this site, so I cant say much about it for you guys that are putting down 11 second passes. But my best time with this clutch is a 13.6 at 102 mph and I plan on flirting with the 12's with some more percise tuning this summer.

The pedal pressure is just slightly more than stock, considerable to a ACT 2100. I guess I have never put multiple passes back to back to test it. In most cases at the track, it is worthless to do this without letting your intake track to cool down. But it has held up to 3 passes in an hour great.

As far as shuttering issues, I have not experienced any. You can always expect some chattering in a upgraded clutch when you drive very low RPMs in high gears, or trying to drive as slow as you can through a parking lot with out engaging the clutch. I have been very impressed with the smoothness and streetability. Also, I hope everyone is getting there flywheels resurfaced before installing a new clutch. DSM flywheels usually take a lot of abuse and suffer from warping and cracking. These will definately lead to chattering and clutch failure.

Sorry this got long, but it looked like a lot of guys were asking questions about the Stage 2.

Good luck.

Frontwheeler -

THANK YOU so much. I totally appreciate the time you took to write out this quick review on the clutch. It makes me a whole lot more comfortable going with this choice.

I'm sure MANY DSMrs down the road will benefit from your review and it'll help them make a good decision as well.

I have been keeping an eye on this thread for a while now... especially sicne my clutch is almost gone... I have been talking to Martin at TheSpeedFactor and have definitely decided on a Spec clutch. The only problem i am having is chossing between the stage2 or stage3... I am FWD so slipping the clutch is somehwhat important.. Does anyone have any experience with the stage3 on a FWD..?? Thanks in advance..

( My mods are in my profile if that helps when giving a suggestion..)

Jester

As I have mentioned before. I personally think that the 6-puck stage 3 is a little too grabby for most FWD cars. It will grab so fast that you won't be able to help but spin (not like a different clutch is going to help that much anyway :shhh: ) The stage 2 will allow itself to be slipped more which is key to a FWD take off. If you have a serious build and a descent suspension the Stage 3 will be ok.

If you just want the stronger grab with the ability to slip the Stage 3 plus is an awesome choice. It offers the power of a stage 3 in a full disk design.
