I have a 1999 gst eclipse and want to get better speakers I would like them to be a able to be loud but would rather they have good audio quality budge around $800-$1000 just speakers not amplifier or anything eles

I don’t think the audio scene is what it used to be. We used to go spend our money at a locally owned audio shop. I don’t know if those exist anymore, but if you have one near you, you should definitely stop by and support them.

To better answer your question, in 2023, I would suggest just going over to crutchfield and seeing what’s available in the sizes you’re looking for. I’m sure they have reviews and whatnot posted. Let us know what you go with and how it sounds!

As a bunch of old farts, I think audio systems are at the bottom of our concern lists with these cars . That being said, I installed some JBL GX door speakers in my Honda and they sound great. Much more crisp than the premium speakers from 30+ years ago. I also have some older JBL rear speakers in my 98. They were nice as well, but don't really get used anymore.

The factory JBL speakers in my wife’s old Rav4 sounded pretty decent too. I’m sure the aftermarket ones are a step above that.

I was recently browsing the Crutchfield site, and saw that if I replaced all 6 speakers in my 90 gsx, I could do it as cheaply as $139. I have to think that those new speakers, even though they're the cheapest ones, with modern materials and design would sound better than the original paper-cone ones, even when they were new. My current 33yo paper cones are not sounding great, and go into total distortion (probably the foam surrounds are deteriorating) at any level beyond what I can hear while idling. That's the other part of the equation: the listening environment. Going 60mph in top (5th) gear has that little motor spinning 3k rpm. That's not very quiet, even at part throttle. How much detail you can hear from your audio with that competing raucousness is questionable. I mostly just listen to the exhaust notes.

If you're looking for any decent bass, you're going to need a powered subwoofer. Those old paper cones, before they disintegrated, actually produced better bass than the new speakers.

Most radios have a 4x50watt power output. With that being said I installed 6.5" in the front and 6"x9" in the rear Alpine Type R speakers that are rated for 300watts rms. It's really up to you what you put in the car as far as brand and price. If you do go the route of the max 300Watt speakers then you would want an amp to at least give them at least 200Watts 4 ways so that you can adjust left/right front/back.
