hey guys i was driving over a speed bump and didnt slow down like i should of well after i hit it my car started to make a rubbing noise and it shuts the engine off if i keep it on any ideas on what it could be? doesnt sound like metal grinding kinda like hard plastic any ideas????

Why don't you open the hood and look down there while the car is runing, and listen for where the noise is coming from?

just when i start the car i pushed it last night and it didnt then i try to start it and the loud noise comes on im going to go check it out since its the day now

I'm about to buy a '90 Eclipse GS-T and the previous owner said he hit a bump going fast and the bottom hit, and some sort of cable broke. He said something about the cable connecting the tranny to something and something about shift linkage, kinda hard to understand him, don't think english was his first language. Anyway the car isn't drivable but I have no idea what he is talking about. Any info about that would be great, and also how much the part would cost and labor or what I need to do to fix it. Thanks.

well what exactly is ur car not doin? Theres a million things u coulda broke. Need 2 give a little more info on it. If its ur linkage u can pop the hood and look to the left of ur motor. Just look down below the intake and see if u can see anything that appears to be broken off or any cables just hanging. Like i said give a lil more info on whats happening

Check all your plugs, sensors, and connections, something came disconnected more than likley it was something to do with the starter it sounds like.

Check the connection behind the clutch, when u push the clutch there thing thingy that has to be pushed down, maybe it broked and need to be replaced.

check your alternator it might have come loose or your starter, sounds like something came unplugged. If it is trying to turn you check your alternator first, can you jump it? if you can jump the car and get it running get a voltmeter and test the battery if its around 14 then your alternator is fine if it is under 12 then your alternator is bad. If your alternator is fine then it may be your starter but if its trying to turn then it could be a clutch wiring problem. Good luck. Oh and make sure the voltmeter is set to DC and not AC or Ohms.

Is your battery properly tied down? Check fuses and make sure the battery terminals didn't short against the hood. If this checks out, go back to the basics and eliminate spark, fuel and compression one at a time.

it's something to do with the fuel pump. The car has power, and is TRYING to turn over, it cranks, just isn't getting fuel. I took the rear seat off, thinking maybe the relay for the pump jiggled off or something. It's getting power at the relay, but the pump isn't coming on (it's a walbro and you can't hear it) It's only like 4 months old, so hopefully it isn't dead.

sorry im new and not very car knowledgable. but everytime i hit a bump of any size at all my car bogs. i know that i need a cam position sensor and an o2 sensor (mil codes) but those are the only ones im getting and i cant really figure how a bump would effect either of those or visa versa.
oh yeah and how hard is it to swap a 4g63 in?........ j/k :rocks:

Is your battery secure? Its possible you are grounding out when the battery hits the hood.

If its secure, check to make sure all your wires and harnesses are secure and free of damage or stripping.

I was driving around 45-50mph...and hit a small bump in the road that I didn't see in time. The front of my car bottomed out, and then my car just died. Powersteering was gone. Lights worked. Radio worked.

I pulled over right away and tried to restart it... It just makes a single click like the battery was dying. Battery cables were connected...no belts came off...everything appeared to be fine. It was midnight and 40 degrees out, so I had it towed to a friend's house instead of trying to fix it on the spot. I'm heading back over there tomorrow... any ideas on what it could be?

WTF I'm clueless on this one.

you may have just hit your skid plate hard enough to cause a hiccup in the motor. I dont think the car knew what happened so it shut off for safety purposes. good luck with the fix man. :thumb:

Today it jump started...

Now it starts every time now...but the starter is making a strange whirling noise when cranking.

Is this a problem?

Our cars don't have skid plates, nor do they have any kind of programming to shut off when the 'car doesn't know what happened to it'.

Put some tape on the underside of your hood/strut bar so that your positive terminal will not ground out again. Also make sure your battery is secured down.

Thanks guys :)

Battery was secured, and the red plastic cover was over the terminal.

Does anyone know what the 'whirling' noise could be when the car is starting up?
