EVERY single bend/pipe was from either jegs or RRE. No custom bends here. Besides, I don't see how that wouldn't work?

I figure, 90* - straight - 45* - straight - angle cut "J" leg :confused:
 
Yeah there are ways to run the short pipes on the 420a's, but people forget we've got this fatty ass turbo just at the top the engine and barely clears the hood that creates a lot of heat.
Our piping is always going to be longer since we've got the turbo inlet and TB on the same side.
 
congrats on the turbo! I would try to change your piping a little. like this

If you did it this way, it would just clean up the one bend thats close to the motor. The other stuff is covered by the bumper

I always thought it would be alittle harder to go the shorter route because would it run into the power steering pump or what about the downpipe as well..I think going double back on the intercooler is what I was going to do...or buy a hahn racecraft type intercooler where the inlet and outlet are on the same side..
 
umm, shouldn't your crankcase breather line from the valve cover either have a breather filter on it or going to the intake side of the turbo...instead of the cold pipe WTF

unless of course, you don't mind blowing your dipstick out ;)

Oh, I never said I didn't like the setup...all turbo 420A's are a great sight (mostly LOL)

I'm just referring to the fact that the vacuum line which should be for the breather in the intake piping or just a filter, is actually tapped into the cold pipe from the intercooler...wouldn't this pressurize the crankcase OMG
 
yeah just run that vacuum from the cold pipe to the wastegate or plug it. just curious as to why you went under the intercooler instead of over. i have my car pretty low and if i had that setup i would need alot of replacement pipe.
 
Nice... is that a premade kit or did you piece it together yourself(kind of like GSgoinfast did) Good job I am insanely jealous :p

They used a t25 turbo though. They should have used a t28 at least but anyway. The intake business side of the turbo would be on the lower right side of the turbo facing the passenger side which would be awsome for a less extensive FMIC piping setup (shorter routed piping).

the 4g63 run a MAFT sensor (the black box on the intake) which looks CONSTANTLY looks at the flow of the air coming in through the intake and adjust the fuel curve on that.

We use a MAP sensor, which does look at airflow coming in, but the MAP based curves are preselected, and changes based on load and throttle position as well. So you don't need the recirculate the air coming out of the BOV because the ecu won't be missing it when it choose a fuel Map to run based on the air flow it ALREADY saw, and other sensors it has.

(I know there is a better explanation for both terms but the simple way to look at this is.....4g63's have a black box on the intake ie MAFT, and the 420's don't, they use a MAP sensor)

do i need to but a map sensor when i turbo my car. Also can i still get a ecu off a gst or gsx and use that or will i need a custom ecu now. One that adjusts like you said.Pretty much can you tell me what ill need for sensors and ecu's and controllers now cause that just threw me off. :confused:
 
Put it like this, when you turbo your car, all you need for now is a fuel set up.

And yes with a 420a you can vent to the atmosphere.

Didn't mean to confuse anything, you don't need any new sensors or ecu or anything. I was just trying to explain why we don't have to reciculate our BOV on a 420a motor.

you need a missing link or a fcd to turbo your 97. about 50 bucks anyway you go.
 
It is a device used to trick the MAP sensor so that it doesn't see boost. So the ECU doesn't sense it, and cut fuel. Missing link goes inbetween the Intake Manifold, and the MAP sensor(far left side of manifold). I'm not sure about FCD but I think you mess with the wiring on the MAP sensor, it is still used for trickery.

Just to clarify a couple things here, since Josh's wording is a bit unclear...

4G63s use a MAS (not MAFT, Rand). Stands for Mass Airflow Sensor. They are also referred to as MAFs for Mass Air Flow (sensor). A MAFT is a Mass Air Flow Translator, which has something to do with translating the signals being sent to the ECU when using a larger-than-stock-diameter MAF from another car. (I'm 99% sure about the translation thing, there.)

EDIT: eldiablodo0d, 4G63s generally can not vent to atmosphere without coming into fuel delivery issues because they run the MAS. Their ECUs are able to determine the amount of air flowing into the engine through the MAS. When the turbo pressurizes the system, more air flows past this sensor and their ECUs can see this. They richen the air fuel ratio (AFR) to keep things safe. If they do not recirculate the air from the BOV, the ECU will still be dumping massive amounts of fuel into the combustion chamber to compensate for the increased air under boost, only there is no longer all that air coming in and they stumble from being overly rich (like flooding). There are ways around this, but you don't need to bother with them on a 420A.

420As use a MAP. Stands for Manifold Absolute Pressure. Our ECU bases its fuel trims on the pressure of the air inside the intake plenum (big round part of the manifold that the TB bolts to). Since the 420A in your 2GNT does not come from the factory with a turbo, the ECU does not have the ability to compensate for boost by increasing fuel delivery. If the MAP sees positive manifold pressure (boost), the ECU cuts fuel to the engine in order to keep you from going way lean and melting things. This brings us to...

Boosted 420As need a FCD or Fuel Cut Defenser. There are two common types...

Mechanical - The missing link is a check valve that prevents the MAP from seeing positive pressure by closing under boost. The ECU sees 0 vacuum and your FPR (fuel pressure regulator like (S)FMU) delivers more fuel to safely richen the pressurized intake charge.

Electrical - Not as common, but there is something called a "voltage clamp" that you connect to the signal line of the MAP sensor which prevents it from sending any signals to the ECU which are above/below that which tells the ECU there is positive manifold pressure. Does the same thing as the missing link, but the ML is much more common due to it's no brainer plug and play configuration.

Before I close, I'd just like to mention that fuel cut also "hits" you at the top of the tachometer whether you're making boost or not. Supposing you're fully spooled, cross redline and the ECU just cuts fuel anyways. I wonder what happens in that combustion chamber at that instant... Some food for thought to make sure all the new kids in this thread realize that it's not all about building boost. Once the turbo is installed, fuel delivery throughout the RPM range is critical to the life of the engine.
